Back Pain Remedy: Muscle Creams And Patches

Most Important Exercises to Help Pinched Nerve & Neck Pain! FAST-RELIEF. (Updated)

Another way to cure back pain at home is to use muscle creams and patches. Many different companies make these products, but the two most popular are Ben Gay and Icy Hot. The medication in the patch or cream works to confuse the nerve endings in your back muscles. By making them feel hot or cold, they are distracted from the pain of the muscle tissue. In addition, the heat from these patches goes a long way toward soothing the muscles that have been strained or sprained. Large patches are probably more convenient, but creams may work better if your muscles are strained higher up on the back, to the side, or over a large area. Dont miss these lower back pain relief treatments that really work.

How To Use Ice And Heat Therapy For Lower Back Pain

The best part of using ice or heat for back pain is that you can often do it with items already in your home. Read on to see why back pain occurs and how these tips can help you use ice or heat for your back pain relief.

Q: What Is A Pain Management Doctor

A: Pain management doctors are board-certified physicians who specialize in treating acute and chronic pain.

Q: Will I become addicted to pain medications?

A: People become physically dependent on many medications, including insulin, antidepressants, and pain medication. However, addiction is different: addiction includes a physiological craving for pharmaceutical and physical dependence. When you take pain medication regularly, your body grows accustomed to getting that pain medication, which could contribute to physical dependence and addiction.

What Is The Best Topical Analgesic For Nerve Pain: Voltaren Vs Aspercreme Vs Icy Hot Vs Bengay

Of the OTC products discussed here, the OTC products with lidocaine are the best and most effective for nerve pain. Lidocaine is an anesthetic and works by blocking nerve conduction to numb the feeling of pain. This makes the lidocaine versions of Aspercreme, Icy Hot, and Bengay better for nerve pain than Voltaren.

Counterirritants may also be used to relieve nerve pain and are sometimes formulated in combination with lidocaine. Capsaicin, an ingredient derived from chili peppers, works by producing a burning sensation and has shown effectiveness in treating neuropathic pain. For some people, these effects of capsaicin may feel uncomfortable.

None of these products should be applied on skin that is broken, infected, swollen, or covered with rash. Discuss pain relief options with your doctor if your symptoms persist.

Does Not Seem To Work Like It Used To

At one time, this product was a stand by in my home growing up and even in my own home when I became an adult and experienced joint and muscle pains. Of course, the main thing I remembered about this product was the smell and and tingle it made once it was applied to the skin. It still has the overpowering smell that reminds you that it is Ben-Gay, however it does not seem to be as effective as it was when I was growing up. It seemed that I had to use it a bit more regularly at the time in order to get a lasting affect. Nonetheless, it somewhat did ease the joint pain. I gave it an 8 because regardless of the relief I may or may not get from this product, I still have a high level of regard for a product that has been around for a good number of years and is still doing a decent job of relieving pain for active people. I still recommend this product for mild to moderately severe pain, as I don’t think joint pain ever fully goes away no matter what you use for it or on it.

Heat And Cold Therapy Can Help Relieve Muscle Tension And Pain

Applying heat and/or cold therapy to the lower back can alleviate muscle tension that is commonly present with a lumbar herniated disc. What Are The Key Differences Between Voltaren Aspercreme Icy Hot And Bengay

Voltaren vs Aspercreme vs Icy Hot vs Bengay: Ingredients

Icy Hot and Bengay have various formulations that contain a combination of counterirritants . Counterirritants create a cooling/warming sensation at the site of application to desensitize pain receptors, and analgesic effects can be felt within the first few minutes of application. Aspercreme contains trolamine salicylate, which relieves pain by inhibiting the inflammatory response, resulting in reduced pain, fever, and swelling within an hour of application.

In addition, Icy Hot, Bengay, and Aspercreme each offer their own lidocaine products. Lidocaine relieves pain by blocking nerve signaling, effectively numbing the area of application. Generally, topical lidocaine takes around 30-60 minutes to start working and may last for 1-3 hours. Icy Hot, Bengay, and Aspercreme are not intended to be used for long term pain management, and it is advised to see your healthcare provider if you have persistent pain that lasts greater than 7 days.

Voltaren gel works similarly to Aspercreme in that it inhibits the inflammatory response, but does so with the NSAID diclofenac as its active ingredient. The full effects of diclofenac gel are typically felt within 7 days of applying four times daily , and may last for 1-2 days after final application. The maximum recommended duration of Voltaren use is 21 days. To learn more about diclofenac versus lidocaine, please read the Curist blog: Diclofenac Gel vs Lidocaine Cream.

The Mystery Of Bengay

Creams like BenGay can relieve minor aches and pains. But exactly why they work is a mystery. Now researchers have discovered a neurological mechanism behind such cooling remedies that, if tapped just right, could have implications for people with chronic and nerve-related pain.

A study published yesterday in the journal Current Biology reveals that activating a crucial protein in the skin may counteract the nerve signals associated with chronic pain brought on by nerve injury. One trigger for this protein receptor is menthol, an active ingredient in topical analgesics like BenGay. But an even more effective trigger is icilin a chemical originally designed for toothpaste and nasal sprays. The researchers found that when applied to the skin, icilin stimulates the bodys natural cooling system, and helps block chronic, nerve-related pain.

Theres a crying need to find safe painkillers for chronic pain use, says Susan Fleetwood-Walker, a neuroscientist at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and co-author of the study. Its extremely difficult to treat and we never expected this cooling effect would have this huge effect that it does.
