A Major Uk Study Has Found That Using Ibuprofen To Treat A Bad Back May Increase The Chances Of Long
Findings show that users of anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen had a 70 per cent higher risk of developing long-term pain.
Researchers believe that anti-inflammatories hinder an aspect of the immune system that plays an important role in repairing damage.
For many decades its been standard medical practice to treat pain with anti-inflammatory drugs. But we found that this short-term fix could lead to longer-term problems, Professor Jeffrey Mogil, of McGill University in Canada, one of the senior authors, said.
Approximately ten million Britons suffer back pain. In England some 5.5 million have severe back pain that has lasted three months or more, according to an estimate from Imperial College London.
Professor Blair Smith of the University of Dundee, who was not involved in the study, said it is important to note that this is just one study.
More research is needed to confirm and investigate this further. It is also important to note that anti-inflammatory drugs are effective in short-term pain management.
Anti-inflammatory drugs have a number of other potentially dangerous side effects, and their long-term use is generally discouraged, other than with caution.

Ibuprofen Has Little Benefit In Treating Back Pain And May Cause Harm Study
Anti-inflammatory drugs are not much more effective than placebo and patients taking them 2.5 times more likely to suffer from stomach problems
Widely used anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen have little more benefit than a placebo when it comes to treating back pain, a comprehensive review has found.
Researchers analysed 35 peer-reviewed trials on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen for back pain, reviewing data from 6,065 patients.
They found that none of the analgesics offered anything more than a mild relief for back-pain sufferers, and the effect was too small to be considered clinically important.
The comprehensive review, in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, found while the drugs offered little to no benefit, patients taking them were 2.5 times more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal problems such a stomach ulcers and bleeding.
Lead author of the paper, Associate Professor Manuela Ferreira from the George Institute for Global Health in Australia, said back pain was the leading cause of disability worldwide and was commonly managed by prescribing anti-inflammatories.
But guidelines should be updated to reflect the drugs had little benefit, she said.
These drugs are effective for other conditions but for people with back pain, we believe there is a bigger role for other treatments, she said.
Thats one of the reasons we tend to use treatments, even when theyre not effective, he said.
What’s The Difference Between Tylenol Advil And Aspirin Which Is The Best To Take For Pain
I used to take acetaminophen for the occasional headache or sore muscle, mostly because that’s what we used in my house growing up. I didn’t think much about whether it was more or less effective than any other type of over-the-counter pain reliever, and I suspect the same is true for many folks. Acetaminophen, after all, is the most popular over-the-counter painkiller worldwide.
So I was surprised when I found out there’s a huge gap between how pain researchers think about this drug and how the public does. More specifically, every researcher I contacted for this piece said some variation of what Andrew Moore, a pain researcher at Oxford University, told me: Tylenol doesn’t actually work that well for pain. To be more exact, he said, “I can’t imagine why anybody would take acetaminophen.”
Moore has done a number of systematic reviews on over-the-counter pain medications, looking at all the available evidence to figure out which ones work best for various problems. I asked him to describe the overall success rates for the most common three: acetaminophen , ibuprofen , and aspirin.
Now, Moore was referring here to acute pain that strikes after a specific event, like a surgery, a cut, or a burn, but his message was simple: Ibuprofen seems to work best, followed by acetaminophen, and then aspirin.
For ongoing pain a sore lower back, say, or the kind of degenerative arthritis that typically develops with age ibuprofen still outperforms acetaminophen.
