Back Pain And Benadryl

I suffer from chronic back pain. Have for about ten years, mostly for the last eight years or so, its been pretty much nuisance level. But the last few weeks Ive been having a flare-up thats been absolutely excruciating, to the point where Ive been crying at work. Which may not be a bad thing, Im a craps dealer, I figure it might be good for some pity tips.

Ive tried all the standard non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, Lortab if its so bad it keeps me from sleeping, and the only thing that I get any kind of meaningful relief from is Benadryl. I found this out accidentally, then I realized that my back flare ups do kind of coincide with my allergy flare-ups.

What gives here? Why does Benadryl work on my back pain?My ex-boyfriend speculated that I might have some kind of auto-immune problem. I just wonder if maybe I have some damaged tissue in my back that my immune system is mistaking for foriegn tissue.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? Know of any websites I can check out that might help explain the back pain/allergy connection?

I dont know about Benadryl and back pain, but I lived in Vegas for almost a decade. Quite a few people swore by support pantyhose and/or girdles. Dont get the stiff girdles, get the ones that are soft and stretchy, and provide light support. Those all-in-one support garments are good for bad backs, too.

yup.

agi, i hope this clears out for you soon. back pain, especially lower back pain , really sucks the sour ass.

Other Treatments And Activities That Dont Help

Bed rest is not helpful for back pain, and might even slow recovery. However heavy physical work should also be avoided in the first few days after a back pain episode starts.

Other treatment options including acupuncture, ultrasound, electrical nerve simulation, and corsets or foot orthotics are not recommended, since there is no strong evidence supporting their use.

Even if the cause of back pain is unknown, imaging is unlikely to influence management or provide meaningful information.

What Does Pulled Strained Or Torn Muscle In Back Feel Like

The symptoms of a strained, pulled, or torn muscle depend much on the cause of the injury and the extent of muscle damage. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that a strained muscle will feel painful and sore and you may notice some swelling around the injured area.

Dr. Lawrence Gulotta, a sports injury specialist, says that muscle injuries can be divided into 3 grades:3

Grade 1 strained back muscle. This will cause mild pain as just a small percentage of muscle tissue is damaged. You will only have minimal loss of motion in your back. Injuries that strain back muscles take about 2-3 weeks to heal if they are treated properly.

Grade 2 pulled back muscle. Severely pulling a back muscle will result in intense pain and can also cause some of the back muscles to tear. A severely pulled trapezius, rhomboid, or latissimus dorsi muscle will take between 2 and 3 months to completely heal.

Grade 3 torn back muscle. If the back muscle gets completely torn or ruptures, this will cause you to feel severe pain and discomfort. It will take many months to heal the torn muscle and in some cases, may take surgery to repair the muscle tear.

Back Muscle Strain Vs Pulled Back Muscle Vs Torn Muscle In Back

Vintage Old 1970’s Doan’s Back Pain Relief Pills Commercial

What is the difference between a strained, pulled, and torn back muscle? Sometimes, these terms are used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference.

A strained back muscle is a general term to describe damage to the muscle or tendon tissue. Doctors from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons say that a back muscle strain can happen over time because of repetitive actions that overstretch or damage the muscle. Or, the strain can be an acute injury caused by falling, twisting, or suffering trauma to the back.1

A pulled muscle in your back is an example of an acute muscle strain that causes mild to severe back pain. Doctors from MedlinePlus say that pulling a muscle or tendon can result in a muscle strain. This can cause muscle spasms, swelling, and make moving the muscle difficult.2

A tear in a back muscle is a more serious injury that results in some of the tissue tearing from the connective joint or tendon. Doctors from the AAOS say that a torn muscle will cause significant swelling and will probably result in the affected area becoming immobile.1

A Move Away From Oral Painkillers

People with back pain are usually told by their health care practitioners to take analgesic medications to relieve their pain.

Out of date Australian guidelines for managing back pain recommend paracetamol as first choice analgesic, NSAIDs as second, and oral opioids as the third line medicines. Paracetamol is still the most purchased over-the-counter painkiller in Australia, but weve shown it to be ineffective for back pain.

The UK 2017 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines now no longer recommend paracetamol as a stand-alone intervention for back pain. In the UK, NSAIDs are recommended as the analgesic of first choice for back pain, and opioids as second.

However in research published last week, we show NSAIDs like ibuprofen and diclofenac offer only marginal relief from back pain compared to a placebo . Only one in six patients treated with NSAIDs achieved any significant reduction in pain.

We also found people taking NSAIDs are more than twice as likely to experience vomiting, nausea, stomach ulcers or bleeding compared to those taking placebo.

The study raises the question of whether the benefits of NSAIDs outweigh the risk of side effects offered by these drugs.

These results were obtained by reviewing 35 studies of 6,065 people with various types of spinal pain, including lower back pain, neck pain and sciatica .

Back Muscle Strain When To See A Doctor

According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, in most cases, you can treat pulled and strained back muscles at home. Home remedies help to improve the healing time and you should be pain-free quicker.

However, there are some conditions that require you to seek medical advice for your pulled upper back muscle or low back pain.17, 18 These are:

  • Tingling or numbness in your back, arms, or legs.
  • You suffer intense back pain after a severe trauma like a car accident or falling.
  • You notice weakness or pain in your legs.
  • You have signs of a fever.
  • You lose control of your bladder or bowels.
  • Severe back pain, especially low back pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night.
