Men describe symptoms they experienced before diagnosis.

Men with early prostate cancer may not have any symptoms, as these usually only occur when the cancer gets big enough to put pressure on the urethra . In men over 50, the prostate gland can get larger due to a non-cancerous condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia .

The symptoms of both benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer are very similar and it is often difficult to tell the difference between the two without further tests.

Over three-quarters of the men we interviewed consulted their GPs because of signs or symptoms, although a few men were diagnosed as the result of routine PSA tests . Before the diagnosis was made many of the men we talked with reported difficulty in passing urine, urgency, and passing urine more frequently than usual, particularly at night. Some men gave detailed descriptions of their symptoms. In some cases symptoms were quite mild while in other cases symptoms were much more severe.

When To Have Psa Tests

The prostate gland produces a protein called PSA. Levels of this protein increase when the prostate is dealing with irritation, swelling, or the growth of cancerous cells.

High levels of PSA in the blood do not necessarily mean that an individual has prostate cancer, but they can suggest that further tests are necessary.

The Prostate Cancer Research Institute recommend that most men start having PSA tests at the age of 45.

Males with a higher risk of developing the disease, including those who are African-American or who have a family history of prostate cancer, should start undergoing these tests at age 40.

Latest Men’s Health News

At the start, prostate cancer does not cause symptoms. As the cancer grows, you may have trouble urinating. Some men need to urinate often, especially at night. Others have pain or burning during urination, blood in the urine or semen, pain in the back, hips, or pelvis, and painful ejaculation.

To find out if these symptoms are caused by prostate cancer, your doctor will ask about your past medical problems and your family’s medical history. He or she will perform a physical exam. During the exam, your doctor will put a gloved finger into your rectum to feel your prostate for hard or lumpy areas.

Your doctor may also do a blood test to check the prostate-specific antigen level. PSA levels can be high in men with an enlarged prostate gland or with prostate cancer. You may also need an ultrasound exam that takes computer pictures of the prostate.

If tests show that you might have cancer, your doctor will want to confirm this with a biopsy. He or she will take out tiny pieces of the prostate to look for cancer cells. Your doctor may want to do a biopsy again to re-check the results.

Treatment for prostate cancer depends on whether cancer is in part or all of the prostate or if it has spread to other parts of the body. It also depends on your age and overall health. Talk with your doctor about the best treatment choice for you. You may want to ask another doctor for a second opinion.

Pain, fatigue, and depression are 1 cluster of symptoms afflicting 1 in 13 survivors of prostate cancer, according to a recent study.

One in 13 survivors of prostate cancer are afflicted with pain, fatigue, and depression as one cluster of symptoms, according to a recent analysis.

This cluster of these 3 specific symptoms is not unknown in cancer, and taken individually, they are also known in prostate cancer. The authors noted that up to 75% of prostate cancer survivors may experience cancer-related fatigue. Urethral pain is reported by 16% following radiation therapy. And on average, 18% of survivors have depression after treatment.

However, the authors sought to explore the specific association of this cluster with prostate cancer. Besides wanting to know the prevalence of this sequelae in prostate cancer, the researchers also aimed to understand more about the factors shared by these survivors.

While the incidence of prostate cancer is rising, so is survival, and so there are more men living with this cancer than any other malignancy, the authors noted.

The study took place in Ireland, where population-based cancer registries exist in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Participants came from both areas. A total of 6559 survivors were sent questionnaires 3348 men participated . They had been diagnosed with prostate cancer 2-18 years previously.

In addition, there was a strong association between the cluster and HRQoL .
