How To Fix Lower Back And Hip Pain

Faqs About Unlock Your Hip Flexors

Q: How is this different from other hip flexibility programs?

A: What makes Rick’s program unique is knowing how to unravel the tricky layers of tension with the very difficult psoas muscle in order to effectively loosen and train it.

Rick’s one-of-a-kind sequential flow is your surest path to looser, stronger and healthier hips.

Q: Why are you selling this so cheap? What’s the catch?

A: There is none. We’re so pleased with the number of our customers who have made the investment in this program and have enjoyed life-changing results.

Our aim is to make this available to as many guys as possible, firstly to welcome more people to our audience and secondly because we’re celebrating hitting a quarter million fans on Facebook.

Q: How long will it take me to do the program?

A: The program is designed to take between 10-15 minutes in total to complete.

We recommended adding the program as a daily practice to get the best results over a longer period of time. You may wish to add this program before or after your regular gym session or use it independently.

Q: How long until I see results?

A: Although everyone is different and results may vary, we know from experience how quickly it’s possible to feel and see a difference.

For some it may be as soon as their first session for others it may take a few sessions to really start seeing the benefits. Again, it depends on the body in question.

Q: Who is this program suitable for?

Q: Are the exercises hard to perform?

Supine Hip Shifting With Internal Rotation

What it does: This drill teaches you to simultaneously posterior tilt the pelvis while actively shifting the head of the femur to the back of the socket, both of which should decrease the sensitivity and the pinching that come with impingement, Kechijian says.

How to do it: Lie on your back with your knees bent at 90 degrees and your feet flat against a wall. Walk your feet out to each side as far as you can comfortably go , but keep your thighs parallel and roughly six inches apart . Tilt your pelvis back by lifting your tailbone slightly, while keeping your lower back flat on the ground. Hold this position, and gently tip your pelvis from side to side .

The knees should move up and down here, not forward and backward, while the lower back remains as stationary as possible on the ground, Kechijian says. The idea is to learn to dissociate the hips from the back.

Perform one to two sets of 30 to 40 shifts per side.

Try These Simple Exercises To Help Relieve Lumbar Spine Pain

Back pain affects 80 percent of us at some point in our lives. The good news is that for many people suffering from low back pain, exercises to stretch the hip flexor muscles can help.

The hip flexors are a group of muscles than run from your thighs all the way up to your low back. They include muscles with strange-sounding names such as the ilacus, the psoas, and the rectus femoris. As a group, these muscles let you bend at the waist and bring your knee to your chest.

The problem is that many of us spend our days sitting. When we do that, these muscles are always in a state of contraction. This causes them to shorten and become weaker.

One of the hip flexor muscles, the psoas is attached to your lumbar vertebraethe five bones that form the spine in your lower back. So you can see why tightness or weakness in this muscle could affect your back.

Stretching the hip flexor muscles can help prevent and treat some causes of lower back pain. If youre having low back pain and you think it might be a result of tight or weak hip flexors, spending a few minutes a day on some simple stretches could help.

Before you start any exercise program, of course, check with your doctor to make sure youre in good enough health to perform the exercises without hurting yourself and that there arent underlying conditions that need to be treated.

If your doctor says its OK, try these stretches:

Childs pose. If youve ever done yoga, youll recognize this basic pose.

Supine stretch.

Stretch #5 Hip Flexor Stretch

Building off of the concept of posterior chain it is important to consider the anterior chain as well.

Deficits in strength and flexibility can lead to several issues and lower back pain is most commonly coupled with weak and tight hip flexors. The hip flexors are the iliacus and psoas muscles. They are primarily responsible for lifting the femur into flexion .

When the pelvis is tilted forward through sitting, poor exercise technique, etc. there is a higher likelihood that the hip flexors will be in a shortened position as they attach to the lower spine and inside of the pelvis.

Over time this can cause weakness and tightness and encourage lower back pain. Fixing this issue at home takes time, but can be done through a hip flexor stretch.

Kneeling on the ground with the front foot put far out in front of you lunge forward while keeping your trunk over your hips and head up. The stretch will occur in the front of the thigh and hip toward the medial part of the leg that you are kneeling on. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds breathing in and out then switch to the other leg.

What Your Physician Isn’t Telling You And What They Dont Know

Diagnosing tight hip flexors is tricky.

If you’ve seen a therapist or physician, chances are they weren’t able to pinpoint the issue.

Buried so deep within your abdomen, it’s no wonder identifying it as the root cause of any of your symptoms is difficult to do.

It’s why tight hip flexors are left undiagnosed and untreated for far too long, as physicians look for a simpler explanation.

So understand that this it’s not your fault.

However, knowing this hands you the power to finally do something about it before it’s too late.

Restore Proper Hip Centration

Getting your hip to sit back in the pocket. If you try and perform a hip hinge and you feel a lot of tightness in your buttock, this may be preventing you from keeping your hip properly centered and as a result you compensate by rounding your spine.

Here’s an exercise that will help you release the posterior capsule and small hip rotators:

  • Get into a 4 point stance with a resistance band around your thigh pulling inferiorly.
  • Internally rotate the hip then sit back and perform 5 small circles in each direction to scour the joint and mobilize the joint capsule.

Fix Lower Back Pain By Deactivating Your Hip Flexors

Hip Mobility to Fix Lower Back Pain

Tight hip flexors can lead to back pain and poor ab development. The movement described in this video deactivates the hip flexors and allows for optimal ab development and alleviation of back pain.

To do this exercise, find a prop to put your heels up. Lay your back on the floor and put heels on the bench. We are going to take advantage of a phenomenon known as Reciprocal Inhibition which sums up to when one muscle is flexed, the muscle on the opposite side tends to relax.

To begin hover your back off the floor and squeeze your glutes. Imagine that you are pulling your upper thighs in, to create inward tension. With glutes squeezed, maintain this squeeze, and do a crunch. At first it will feel weird but continue to reach forward and preform a crunch. This is a slow correctional exercise, so 2 seconds up, 2 second hold, 2 seconds down. Breath out on the way up, and inhale on the way down.

You know you are doing this right if you feel it in your glutes and your abdominals. Make sure to raise your glutes throughout the entirety of the exercise, and maintain hips of the ground.

Improve Psoas Strength When The Hip Is Flexed

The psoas muscles are two thick bands of tissue that connect the lower spine to the tops of your thigh bones. The psoas muscles are part of a muscle group known as the hip-flexors. Their primary function is to lift the thighs toward the torso allowing us to run, walk uphill, and climb stairs.

In movements requiring hip flexion , strong psoas muscles help stabilize your spine.

If your psoas is not working well when you try and hip hinge, your back will round, and this is what we want to avoid.

So, how do you activate and strengthen the psoas?

If you want even more detail on how the psoas works and what you can do to turn them on and strengthen them check out this psoas live video.

I recommend that you perform your favorite psoas activation exercise from these videos prior to performing your deadlift.

Lets begin with the alternating leg lift. Lie on your back, hands under your rear. Keeping your legs straight, lift one about 12 inches up from the floor and put it down again. 12 to 15 repetitions on each side should do it, and you can use ankle weights for progressive strength training.

Next, well do hanging knee lifts. Grasp a chinning bar, bring your knees to chest level and back down again, 15 to 20 reps is a good rep range to shoot for.

Finally, you can do V sits, which will work your psoas isometrically and develop hip stability. From a seated position on the floor, straighten your arms in front of you and lift your knees up.

Your Brain Onthis Is Your Brain On Yoga

As a yoga instructor, I have a few favorite stretches for the hips and theyre not just my favorites because they feel good theyre extremely functional and work the hip from all angles. Frangiamore is also a fan of these yoga poses. Stretches like the pigeon pose, warrior 1 and groin stretches all work to lengthen muscles that attach around the hip joint , which become shortened after prolonged sitting or resting, he says. Lengthening these muscles can decrease tension and excessive pull on the hips and lower back which can improve posture and decrease associated pain.

Ready to get loose? Give these three stretches a try.

Learn More About Hip Injections

How to Relieve Hip Flexor Pain in 30 SECONDS

Hip injections may be performed to both diagnose and treat hip pain. They involve injecting a local anesthetic combined with a steroid or corticosteroid directly into the outer regions of the spinal cord. This is where nerves lead to the hip, or in the hip joint itself. This procedure can:

  • Help diagnose what specific nerve is leading to your pain
  • Focus further treatments
  • Inhibit pain signals of hip nerves
  • Drain fluid in the hip

Hip injections provide a minimally-invasive and safe treatment option for more moderate to severe cases of hip pain.

What Can I Expect For My Recovery Time

Because your muscles and joints need to adjust with your changes incrementally, healing and rebuilding is a slow process. It takes time for the weaker areas of your body to respond and support you.

Any treatment plan worth doing will require time, especially in circumstances where injuries have occurred. Many have proven to help provide real relief within the first week of practice.

The best approach is with structured and targeted movements. Not gym workouts but simple and quick movements and stretches. Theyll protect your back, leg and hip mobility.

When Is Lower Back Pain An Emergency

Most episodes of lower back pain eventually resolve on their own, but there are times when you should seek urgent medical attention. Some of these situations include:

  • Patient is a child
  • Pain is severe, constant, suddenly or progressively worsens, and/or doesnt go away
  • Pain interrupts sleep

While some situations may warrant immediate intervention, most cases are not urgent and can be scheduled at a time convenient for the patient.

When You Should See A Doctor

Fix Hip and Lower Back Pain

If your hip pain is regularly keeping you from sleep or waking you up at night, see your doctor.

They may check for tenderness and swelling around your hip. Theyll also assess the range of motion of your hip for signs of arthritis and tendonitis. Reduced motion is a sign of arthritis.

They may also take blood or fluid samples, or order X-rays to rule out various conditions.

Go to an urgent care facility or to an emergency room if your hip pain is caused from an injury.

Also seek immediate care if you have any of these symptoms:

  • a joint that looks deformed
  • inability to move your leg or hip
  • inability to put weight on the leg with the sore hip
  • intense pain or sudden swelling in your hip
  • fever, chills, redness, or other signs of infection

Stronger & Faster Than Ever

“Being an athlete all my life and having endured multiple knee surgeries due to blowing out ACL’s in both knees, I later started to develop a hip issue in my right hip due to the years of wear and tear. It actually got so bad it was hard for me to perform as an athlete as well as be a productive coach for my clients.

After getting an MRI to have it checked out, I realized I had a degenerative arthritic condition in the hip that is not reversible. Surgery was not an option I wanted to go through so I contacted Rick Kaselj to see if he had something for me. When I started to apply the strategies from Unlock Your Hip Flexors it helped me re-balance my pelvis and hip joint to where I couldn’t even tell I had an issue anymore.

These days I’m stronger and faster than ever and still competing in sports. Rick gave me the ability to perform at my highest level as a coach and regain the athletic ability I had lost over the years from wear and tear. Keeping Your Hip Open:

Once you have returned the hips to a normal resting position. You can then begin training the glutes to work more efficiently. To wake up the glutes and get them firing on all cylinders perform the single glute bridge with hamstring lock: from our 28-day mobility challenge.

It helps to strengthen the glutes while also engaging the core, the added bonus of this variation is it doesnt require any equipment which means you have no excuse for not doing it. If the single leg variation is to much to begin with you can try squeezing your thigh close or tight to your chest, or begin with the both legs on the ground and work up to the single leg variation.
