As cannabis gets its legal status in the USA, thousands of users have jumped to grab their favorite strain for medical or recreational purposes. But, the history of medical marijuana goes back to four decades. Around 1975, some experts observed that certain strains could effectively relieve pain.

The research has not stopped to date many scientists have contributed to the field and arrived at the same conclusion. In 1999, the Institute of Medicine showed that cannabinoids could effectively relieve pain.

The University of Colorado Spine Center also found that medical cannabis with powerful pain-relieving properties works better than opioids to relieve acute pain.

If You Have Arthritis Or Other Chronic Pain You Might Be Wondering Whether Thc Or Cbd Is Better Theyre Both Found In Cannabis Plants But Are Very Different Compounds

People with arthritis and other chronic musculoskeletal pain are increasingly turning to cannabis products for relief from different symptoms, such as pain, fatigue, insomnia, and anxiety. In fact, a recent CreakyJoints survey of people with arthritis found that more than half had tried marijuana or CBD for a medical reason.

While cannabis plants are complex and different varieties have different chemical compositions, almost all of them contain some combination of two medically important compounds: tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol .

THC is responsible for that high that people get from marijuana, which may also play a role in pain relief. CBD doesnt usually cause an intoxicating feeling, but research suggests it, too, may help ease arthritis symptoms.

These two chemicals both show potential in easing pain, but in different ways. Choosing a product rich in THC, CBD, or both could make a difference in the kind of pain relief you experience if any.

Heres what experts say about the differences between THC and CBD for pain relief.

Everyone has a cell-signaling system known as the endocannabinoid system .

Some researchers think that CBD interacts with a core component of the ECS endocannabinoid receptors in your brain and immune system.

Receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells. They receive signals, mostly chemical ones, from different stimuli and help your cells respond.

This response creates anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects that help with pain management. This means that CBD oil and other products may benefit people with chronic pain, such as chronic back pain.

One 2018 review assessed how well CBD works to relieve chronic pain. The review looked at studies conducted between 1975 and March 2018. These studies examined various types of pain, including:

  • cancer pain

2016 study looked at CBD use in rats with arthritis.

Researchers applied CBD gel to rats for four days in a row. The rats received either 0.6, 3.1, 6.2, or 62.3 milligrams per day. The researchers noted reduced inflammation and overall pain in the rats affected joints. There were no obvious side effects.

Rats who received low doses of 0.6 or 3.1 mg didnt improve their pain scores. The researchers found that 6.2 mg/day was a high enough dose to reduce the rats pain and swelling.

In addition, rats who received 62.3 mg/day had similar outcomes to the rats that received 6.2 mg/day. Receiving a substantially larger dosage didnt result in them having less pain.

What Should You Look For To Understand Strain Effects

Do Inversion Tables Work? (for Back Pain & Sciatica)

The often-applied rule of thumb is that sativas are more invigorating and energizing, while indicas are more relaxing and calming but it isnt really that simple.

Individual plants produce varying effects, even among the same type of cannabis. It all depends on the plants chemical composition and the growing technique used.

Instead of looking at the type alone sativa or indica look at the description the grower and dispensary provide.

Oftentimes, the plant types are broken down into specific chemovars, or breeds.

Chemovars are distinguished by their individual cannabinoid and terpene content. This cannabinoid profile will provide the user with the best information to help them determine which chemovar is best suited for them.

Relying on names does not provide the user with the necessary information to pick the correct profile. These compounds are what determine the chemovars overall effects.

Examine The Thc: Cbd Ratio Closely

The most measurable way to anticipate how a certain medical marijuana product will affect you is by its ratio of THC to CBD. Many brands advertise or label their product with this ratio, but without testing of the finished product, we cant be 100% sure whats inside.

Many physicians and medical marijuana sellers will recommend a 1:1 ratio to begin. This means that the marijuana is equal parts THC to CBD. .

Remember, marijuana is a plant and its compounds work cooperatively . To quickly explain, CBD can help to balance out the psychotropic effects of marijuana and THC aids in the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of CBD. If you are concerned about the high of marijuana, youll want to try a product that has a greater percentage of CBD, while maintaining a THC profile. Just like any medicine , your body weight, metabolism, and composition will help determine your personalized dosage.

Some product sites feature a weight chart to find the right dosage you should clarify this with your dispensary and/or doctor before ingesting anything.

For a less balanced approach, you can experiment with THC or CBD dominant strains. Heres a quick guide although each dispensary or manufacturer may offer distinct products just as you would a prescription, always double check the labels.

Can I Use Cannabis To Help With My Back Pain

Ive strained my back and in some really discomfort and was wondering what strain and how useful weed is for back pain

Even if it doesn’t work you’ll still get high. So that’s cool.

Thats very true haha

Try it no harm in trying. Maybe edibles might be a thing to if you are worried about smoking. Watch out they do take a while to kick in and are much stronger than smoking.

Im not worried about smoking, I just didnt know weather it would help, would thc or cbd work best?

MY LOWER BACK IS KILLING ME

Yes it will help a lot

I haven’t actually strained my back, but it’s helped with toothache, broken leg, broken wrist, multiple stitches, headaches, gym muscle soreness, knackered knee and of course, with not being high.

If you’re hurt enough to want to lie still, an indica, if you need to get up and do stuff then a sativa, however be careful if you’re not a regular smoker with sativa, that’s more likely to get a little too high.

CBD weed might even help but I know nothing about that yet, thinking to try some now it seems to be legal/available in the UK more.

Thats great info thanks a bunch, and yeah I need to be up and moving so Ill have to get some sativa and yeah Holland and barret sell cbd oils although Im not too sure how effective they are since theyre quite low cbd %

Edibles are great for loosening up joints and muscles. CBD is also nice if you don’t want to get stoned.

Choosing An Alternative To Opioid Pain Medications: Is Weed Good For Back Pain

Those suffering from chronic back pain are willing to try any number of medications and/or other types of treatment to find some sense of relief despite uncomfortable side effects. Opiate medications certainly alleviate pain, but side effects are the least of the problems associated with regular opiate use. Cannabis contains many cannabinoids with potential healing properties, but we know both CBD and THC can reduce pain and inflammation without the side effects and addictive potential that accompany consistent opiate maintenance. Cannabinoids pain relief is simply a safer alternative. If youre treating back pain with opiates but live in a state that has implemented marijuana legalization, I strongly encourage you to discuss medical cannabis with your doctor. And, you wont need to ask him, Is marijiuana good for pain?

Can Cannabis Also Cause Anxiety

Cannabis is a double-edged sword of an anxiety treatment as it has an unfortunate dual effect: it can cause anxiety as well as alleviating it. This is possible because of the two main chemicals in cannabis. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the euphoric high sensation most often associated with cannabis use. It can create relaxation as well as increase heart rate , as well as create anxiety at higher doses.

Another chemical, CBD , is non-psychoactive. CBD actually works against the high induced by THC and has anxiety-relieving benefits of its own.

A 2017 University of Washington study backs up these findings. In short, this study found that low doses of THC can decrease anxiety, while high doses of THC can increase it. Meanwhile, it confirmed that CBD decreases anxiety at all doses.

Best Type Of Cannabis For Back Pain Relief

Like we touched upon earlier on, there is more than one different strain of medical marijuana and there are many types of cannabinoids. Each different type will have a different kind of effect on your brain and body.

As a general disclaimer, everybody is likely to have slightly different results with each different marijuana strain so there may be a little bit of experimentation required on the part of the patient to help relieve their pain.

The 2 most observed compounds are THC and CBD.

Both of the compounds are very similar in structure, but they have different effects on your body. The main difference is the psychoactive effects they each have on the brain.

CBD usually comes in the form of an extract that is ingested orally and has no psychoactive effect on the brain. THC, on the other hand, is the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana and is responsible for causing the high feeling you get from marijuana.

Both THC and CBD have been observed to have pain-relieving, analgesic properties.

In short, both types have some similar effects, but you do not get the euphoric feelings of THC when taking CBD. For some people, this will be a welcome benefit as they can use marijuana to relieve their pain without altering their mental state.

Recently, the first prescription drug to contain CBD has hit the market: it is called Epidiolex and is used for treating some forms of epilepsy.
