How To Use Integrative Therapies And Healing Practices In Back Pain

Taking DEADLY amounts of IBUPROFEN for Low Back Pain

Many people who suffer from back pain experience either chronic, persistent pain, or chronic pain with occasional episodes of acute pain. Because long term use of oral medications is not optimally effective and has risks of side-effects and dependence, you should consider alternative strategies.

To help reduce acute aggravations and avoid additional pain, it is important to have a maintenance/prevention plan. This should include a regular exercise program with stretching, strength training, and endurance and aerobic activities. Yoga is a good base activity for many people.

It can also be beneficial to have an on-going relationship with a manual therapist, be it a chiropractor, osteopath, or massage therapist, as regular bodywork can help prevent additional pain.

A regular meditation or relaxation practice can help you cope with pain, as can a self-reflection practice that honestly addresses emotional awareness and health.

Maintaining a healthy weight is an important practice for preventing and maintaining back pain since it decreases the stress on your muscles.

With these behaviors and relationships as a foundation, you should be well positioned to respond to an aggravation or acute flare, should that occur.

Rub On Medicated Creams

Skin creams, salves, ointments, or patches may help when your back feels stiff, sore, and tense. Many of these products contain ingredients such as menthol, camphor, or lidocaine that can cool, heat, or numb the affected area.

Put on creams right where you hurt. Ask someone to apply it if you have trouble reaching the spot.

âIts not going to be a mainstay at providing significant relief, but it can calm things down,â Ray says.

Six Tips For Treating Chronic Pain

6. Find your team.In an ideal world, doctors would know how to deal with chronic conditions like pain. In this world, you might need to actively track down the care team for you.

The study began when researchers at McGill University started searching for molecular markers in the blood that would predict which patients would have pain that quickly diminished and which would have pain that persisted.

The group had blood samples from 98 people taken when they first reported developing back pain and again three months after their pain began.

What we saw wasnt exactly what we expected, said Dr. Luda Diatchenko, the studys principal investigator and a professor at McGill who specializes in human pain genetics.

Those who said their pain went away had rapid and intense inflammation when the pain was acute. The markers of inflammation then diminished over the next three months. Those whose pain persisted did not have such an inflammatory reaction.

Absolutely nothing was happening in those with chronic pain, Dr. Diatchenko said.

It was a huge difference, she added.

The researchers continued to investigate. They studied people with a different type of pain, TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorders, which result in jaw pain. Once again, those who recovered had rapid and intense inflammatory responses.

Only with diclofenac did the pain persist, becoming chronic.

We need to think further about how to treat our patients, she said.

Medicines For Back Pain

Acute back pain often goes away on its own over several weeks. In some people, back pain persists. It may not go away completely or it may get more painful at times.

Medicines can also help with your back pain.

OVER-THE-COUNTER PAIN RELIEVERS

Over-the-counter means you can buy them without a prescription.

Most health care providers recommend acetaminophen first because it has fewer side effects than other drugs. Do not take more than 3 grams on any one day, or over 24 hours. Overdosing on acetaminophen can cause severe damage to your liver. If you already have liver disease, ask your doctor if acetaminophen is OK for you to take.

If your pain continues, your provider may suggest nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs . You can buy some NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, without a prescription. NSAIDs help reduce the swelling around the swollen disk or arthritis in the back.

NSAIDs and acetaminophen in high doses, or if taken for a long time, can cause serious side effects. Side effects include stomach pain, ulcers or bleeding, and kidney or liver damage. If side effects occur, stop taking the drug right away and tell your provider.

If you are taking pain relievers for more than a week, tell your provider. You may need to be watched for side effects.

Examples of narcotics include:

  • Fentanyl — available as a patch
  • Hydrocodone

Is There Any Evidence To Support Taking Acetaminophen And Ibuprofen Together

Research does support taking ibuprofen and acetaminophen in combination as being more effective than taking either one alone.

Ibuprofen 200 mg/paracetamol 500 mg and ibuprofen 400 mg/paracetamol 1000 mg were significantly more effective in providing sustained pain relief in adults with moderate to severe acute dental pain than comparable doses of ibuprofen or paracetamol alone.1

The combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen was just as effective as oxycodone, hydrocodone, or codeine in combination with acetaminophen in a trial of 416 patients in moderate to severe pain .2,3

What Other Drugs Will Affect Ibuprofen

Ask your doctor before using ibuprofen if you take an antidepressant. Taking certain antidepressants with an NSAID may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using ibuprofen with any other medications, especially:

  • a blood thinner

  • heart or blood pressure medication, including a diuretic or “water pill” or

  • steroid medicine .

This list is not complete. Other drugs may interact with ibuprofen, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Not all possible drug interactions are listed here.
