How To Use A Tens Machine Properly
Each individual TENS unit comes with an instruction manual which will explain the different settings and most include pictures to show you where to stick the the electrodes. Every brand of machine is slightly different so please do read your instruction manual.
You can choose to use either 2 or 4 electrode pads depending on how large the area of pain is that you are treating.
If your lower back pain is on one side, try using two electrodes. Place one pad at the top point of the pain and one pad below . Try to place the pads on the muscle as opposed to directly onto your back bones:
If you have pain in the middle of your back or either side of your spine, try using 4 electrodes. Place placing one electrode either side of your spine at the top point of your pain about 1 inch out from the spine. Place the other two either side of your spine at the base of your pain, again 1 inch out from the spine:

The changes in pain scores are impressive, says Jeremy Walker, an anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center who was not involved in the study. While I would have some concerns about the long-term effects . . . the degree of pain relief certainly justifies further study.
Most treatments for pain are pharmaceutical, but unfortunately these drugs can come with serious side effects, including the risk of developing a substance use disorder. So Stephen McMahon, a physiologist at Kings College London, and his colleagues decided to take a different approach: using electricity to tweak how pain neurons behave.
McMahon, the senior author of the new study, says thats because controlling pain requires a different stimulation strategy than treating diseases such as Parkinsons. Most neurostimulation is little pulses of electricity that excite things, but then you have to turn the excitation into inhibition if youre trying to control pain, he explains.

- An implantable device . Do not use TENS therapy over or close to the areas where an electronic device is implanted. TENS could cause these devices to malfunction.

- Cancer. Do not apply electrodes to areas of the body where there is known or suspected cancer. Do not use TENS if you have undiagnosed pain and a history of cancer in the last 5 years.
