In general aspirin and Aleve have similar uses such as relieving pain and reducing fevers. Unlike Aleve, aspirin may prevent second heart attacks and strokes. Some formulas of aspirin, such as Bayer Advanced Aspirin work in as little as 16 minutes.

Because Aleve lasts longer, it may be a better choice for people with chronic pain. More doctors prescribe non-aspirin NSAIDs such as Aleve for different types of arthritis. It lasts longer, but it takes longer to start working. So its not a good choice for quick pain relief.

Aspirin and Aleve uses include:

How Long Does Aleve Stay In Your System

Naproxen is one of the longest-lasting pain relievers available without a prescription. With a half-life of 1317 hours, Aleve provides at least some symptom relief for about that length of time. As a general rule, it takes about four or five half-lives for the body to clear a drug out of the bloodstream. Naproxen, then, takes about 85 hours to be eliminated from the body. The slow elimination of naproxen can be significant. Naproxen and other NSAIDs can produce false-positive results on drug tests for barbiturates or marijuana.

Aleve is a brand-name over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer. The active ingredient, naproxen sodium, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. NSAIDs work by blocking the bodys ability to produce prostaglandins, substances responsible for pain, fever, and swelling. However, unlike other NSAIDs and OTC pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, naproxen is long-acting. Aleve only needs to be taken once every eight to 12 hours orally for symptom relief.

    How Does Tylenol Work

The active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen, which blocks pain signals in the brain.

Acetaminophen is an analgesic and antipyretic. It inhibits the pain sensors in the nervous system, and it can also reduce fevers.

However, researchers still do not fully understand how acetaminophen blocks pain signals.

Healthcare professionals usually suggest starting off with the smallest dosage of a drug. If the symptoms persist, they then recommend increasing the dosage or adding another medication.

Starting off with the lowest effective dosage reduces the risk of side effects.

Doctors generally recommend taking different dosages of Aleve and Tylenol. The same is true for other drugs that contain naproxen or acetaminophen.

The recommended dosage of Aleve, for adults, is one pill every 8â12 hours. However, this depends on the strength of the medication.

A person can usually take acetaminophen-based pain relievers like Tylenol more frequently.

Tylenol generally comes in 325 milligram , 500 mg, or 650 mg pills. Citing the productâs labeling, Harvard Medical School reports that a healthy adult can take Tylenol in any of the following doses:

    • 1 or 2 325 mg pills every 4â6 hours, taking no more than 8â10 pills per day
    • 1 or 2 500 mg pills every 4â6 hours, taking no more than 6 pills per day
    • 1 or 2 650 mg extended release pills every 8 hours, taking no more than 4â6 pills per day
