Can Inguinal Hernia Cause Lower Back Pain

Is It A Lumbar Triangle Hernia

Inguinal hernia signs, symptoms, and treatment

A lumbar triangle hernia is a rare medical condition thatoccurs when tissue develops an injury in the flank, and this can also lead toback pain.

A Lumbar hernia can be identified as a lump on the back that can cause pain in coughing. The lump may still be evident on lying down and it may get irritated during a workout.

Lumbar triangle hernia generally includes fat covering the bowel but can seldom contain bowel.

What Are The Causes Of A Back Hernia

While multiple issues may cause a bulge on intervertebral discs, we will cover just a few here. First of all, in more than half of the people over 50 years of age, there is wear and tear of the back. This is due to a natural process related to ageing. Usually, this form of hernia is not directly associated with complaints. If the hernia is already occurring between 25 and 50 years, then cause can then be a heavy load on the back. Furthermore, lack of movement, prolonged sitting, weakness of the back muscles, obesity, and bad posture can consequently lead to a hernia. Hernias also occur more frequently in smokers than in non-smokers.

What Are The Different Types Of Abdominal Hernias

Hernias of the abdominal and pelvic floor

  • Inguinal hernias are the most common of the abdominal hernias. The inguinal canal is an opening that allows the spermatic cord and testicle to descend from the abdomen into the scrotum as the fetus develops and matures. After the testicle descends, the opening is supposed to close tightly, but sometimes the muscles that attach to the pelvis leave a weakened area. If later in life there is a stress placed on that area, the weakened tissues can allow a portion of small bowel or omentum to slide through that opening, causing pain and producing a bulge. Inguinal hernias are less likely to occur in women because there is no need for an opening in the inguinal canal to allow for the migration and descent of testicles.
  • A femoral hernia may occur through the opening in the floor of the abdomen where there is space for the femoral artery and vein to pass from the abdomen into the upper leg. Because of their wider bone structure, femoral hernias tend to occur more frequently in women.
  • Obturator hernias are the least common hernia of the pelvic floor. These are mostly found in women who have had multiple pregnancies or who have lost significant weight. The hernia occurs through the obturator canal, another connection of the abdominal cavity to the leg, and contains the obturator artery, vein, and nerve.

How Do You Treat Chronic Pain After Inguinal Hernia Surgery

Treatment options available for treating chronic inguinal pain range from over-the-counter oral medications to surgery.

In most cases, chronic pain is treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen. However, if the pain doesnt go away after a few months, the doctor may try stronger medications such as prescription opioid medications.

Another option is a minimally invasive procedure called nerve blocks. It uses anesthetic injection to temporarily turn off a pain signal.

If medications and noninvasive procedures do not work, the last resort would be surgical treatment. Depending on the site or cause of the pain, a surgeon may recommend mesh removal or a neurectomy, which is a surgical removal of all or part of a nerve, or both.

When To See A Doctor

There may come a time when you need to get medical attention for your hernia. Usually its when youve gotten to the point where you cant tolerate the pain any longer, or its preventing you from being able to carry out your normal activities of daily living.

Depending on the type of hernia, a doctor might suggest starting with a nonsurgical treatment. For example, you might be able to manage the pain of a herniated disc with a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug . But its possible that down the road, you might need surgery.

Medical emergency

If you develop any of these symptoms, dont wait to make an appointment. Go to an emergency room if you experience:

  • severe or worsening pain
  • trouble having a bowel movement
  • urinary incontinence or retention

In some cases, you might do just fine with pain-relieving medications and the passage of time. In other cases, a doctor may suggest a surgical repair to fix the problem and hopefully free you from pain in the future.

If you have an abdominal hernia, you may indeed need surgical repair.

If you have a herniated disc, your doctor might start with a conservative approach first by recommending pain relieving medications, along with physical therapy.

The nonsurgical approach works to improve the pain and other symptoms for the vast majority of people with herniated discsabout 9 out of 10 times, according to the AANS.

Lower Back And Leg Pain From A Herniated Disc

My solution to lower back pain post hernia surgery

Many patients with lower back pain, sciatica, pain down the back of the legs, or weakness of the lower-extremity muscles are diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc. Nerves surrounding the spine are very sensitive to irritation and pressure that stems from a shift in disc position or physical damage to the disc itself, resulting in discomfort that can range from mild to severe.

Treatment to resolve related back and/or leg pain depends on the type of spinal disc herniation and the severity, but getting a medical evaluation early-on helps ensure better outcomes.

Other types of hernia that can affect the tummy include:

  • incisional hernias where tissue pokes through a surgical wound in your tummy that has not fully healed
  • epigastric hernias where fatty tissue pokes through your tummy, between your belly button and the lower part of your breastbone
  • spigelian hernias where part of your bowel pokes through your tummy at the side of your abdominal muscle, below your belly button
  • diaphragmatic hernias where organs in your tummy move into your chest through an opening in the diaphragm this can also affect babies if their diaphragm does not develop properly in the womb
  • muscle hernias where part of a muscle pokes through your tummy they also occur in leg muscles as the result of a sports injury

What Are Your Options For Relief

If you had surgery to repair a hernia and are still havingpain after three months, its time to talk with your surgeon, Dr. Krpata says.

Your surgeon should consider all possible treatment optionsto determine which is best for relieving your pain. Options may include:

  • Mesh removal surgical removal of the abdominal mesh.
  • Neurectomy surgical removal of a nerve or part of a nerve.
  • PRP injections injection of a plasma-rich protein complex to promote healing and ease nerve pain.
  • Nerve ablation a minimally invasive procedure that uses electrical currents to dampen nerve pain.
  • Pain management through medication or anesthetic injections.

While injections, nerve ablation and medication can helpease pain, they dont do much to help the underlying issue, Dr. Krpata says.

Can a femoral or inguinal hernia cause absolutely horrendous accute lower back pain? I ask because way back in March months before I found out that I actually have these two types of hernias….out of the blue, I developed such a sudden and acute case of horrible lower right back pain that I was stuck on my back in bed for a day. It felt like a nerve that kept traveling from what seemed to be my hip area to my back. Everytime I tried to move my right leg in an attempt to get up, a wave of emmense nerve pain would go to my lower spine and vice versa.I was also told that the inguinal hernia on the right side is worse than the other side…so i’m beginning to wonder if that was the what happened to me that day? Perhaps a nerve was entrapped in the hernia itself, is that possible? Kidney stones were ruled out as well.

I make my low back sore when I work legs and do squats with my current position. It is a function of trying to protect that low left quadrant and not pull on it while I am trying to keep myself together physically and work out. That said, on my most painful days when I had the hernia and in my current state of possibly having it back, I got referred pain in the side, a bit in the back, and down the groin.

How To Tell If Your Back Pain Is Caused By A Hernia

Successfully diagnosing the root cause of your back pain is the very first step in working towards a solution. To the frustration of many physicians and patients alike, there are many conditions with overlapping symptoms. Differentiating between specific conditions is necessary and begins with recognition of symptoms. Here are a few signs that your back pain may be caused by a hernia rather than another spine condition:

  • You experience pain in the groin or abdomen in addition to back pain.
  • You notice a bulge in your abdomen or groin area.

Are There Any Risks From The Operation

An inguinal hernia repair is a routine operation with very few risks. But a small number of hernias can come back at some point after surgery.

Other potential complications of an inguinal hernia repair include:

  • blood or fluid building up in the space left by the hernia
  • pain and numbness in the groin area caused by a nerve being damaged or trapped during surgery
  • damage to the blood supply to the testicles
  • damage to the vas deferens

Complications are more likely if youâre aged over 50, smoke or have another illness, such as heart disease or breathing problems.

What Is A Hernia

If youve experienced a sudden pain in your groin or a feeling as if something is going to tear, you might be right. A hernia is a weakness or tear in the abdominal muscle wall that normally holds the inner lining of the abdomen and internal organs in place . A weakness or tear allows the inner lining to protrude and create a pouch. The bulge you can see is usually a loop of intestine protruding through the tear in the muscle and into this pouch.Contrary to popular myth , you did not cause your hernia. Most people are born with a weakness in the muscle that eventually loosens, or an opening that didnt close before birth .

What Are The Symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person and depend on the location of the surgery, type of surgery, type of mesh and any preexisting pain a patient may have had.

If postoperative pain gets in the way of daily activities and remains severe after six months, the patient may be suffering from chronic hernia mesh pain. Patients who have pain for longer than three months should speak to their surgeons about treatment options.

What Is A Spinal Hernia And How Does It Differ From Abdominal Hernias

A spinal hernia is also called a herniated disc, slipped disc, prolapsed disc, and ruptured disc.

This condition develops when the gel-like substance inside the discs that cushion between each one of the bones in your vertebrae begins to squeeze out the side through a weakened area of the discs outer band.

Because the spinal canal is narrow, the slipped disc often puts pressure on a spinal nerve, which causes pain in your back. Sometimes, people will experience some numbness or tingling.

A herniated disc is similar in principle to an abdominal hernia: something within is trying to get out, and the result is pain. But the location differs, and so does the substance thats trying to migrate beyond its usual boundaries.

With an abdominal hernia, a structure inside the abdominal cavity pushes through a weakened area of muscle or other tissue in your abdominal wall to create a bulge or a lump.

But with a herniated disc, that gelatinous substance in the middle of the disc squeezes out through a weakness or rupture in the tough outer edge of the disc.

Herniation can occur in any disc in any part of your spine. The most common site for a herniated disc is the lower back.

If it doesnt press on a nerve, you might only experience a mild backache in your lower back.

But sometimes the disc ruptures and puts pressure on one or more lumbar nerve roots that come together to become your sciatic nerve, which is a very long nerve that runs through your hips and buttocks and down your legs.
