Humira For Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Humira is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe hidradenitis suppurativa, a chronic skin condition. Chronic means long term. The main symptoms are painful skin breakouts that can occur in areas such as the armpits, groin, and inner thighs. These breakouts are often painful and can take numerous forms, including pimple-like red bumps, cysts or nodules, and boils. The breakouts can be triggered or worsened by things like stress, heat, and hormonal changes.

Its not known exactly what leads to HS, but an overactive immune system is believed to be one possible cause. Humira treats HS by blocking a protein called tumor necrosis factor . This decreases the activity of your immune system, leading to a reduction in the number and severity of skin breakouts.

Effectiveness for hidradenitis suppurativa

Humira has been proven effective in adults with moderate to severe HS.

In clinical studies, people with HS received either Humira or a placebo. People in both groups also used a topical antiseptic wash each day. Researchers wanted to see if Humira was better than a placebo at reducing the number of skin lesions and breakouts by at least 50%. This is defined as a clinical response.

The researchers found that 42% to 59% of people who took Humira had a clinical response, compared with only 26% to 28% of people who took a placebo.

    Tnf And Your Immune System:

When your immune system detects something out of whack in your body it activates compounds designated tumor necrosis factors . Whether it is a bacterial infection or a viral invasion, TNF is created to fight off the foreign invaders. If you come down with the flu your body will make TNF as one of the first lines of defense to combat the virus .

If tumor and necrosis caught your attention you are also on target. Necrosis comes from the greek word nekrosis, which means becoming dead or the death of cells or tissues. In other words, tumor necrosis factor has anti-tumor activity and may play a key role in cancer detection and therapy .

    Inflammation Plays A Big Role

What causes back pain? And what treatments can help? – George Pan, MD | UCLA Pain Center

Lower back pain is a common health problem. It is typically caused by injury or strain to the back, known as mechanical back pain. But your back pain could also be signaling a more serious condition.

Ankylosing spondylitispronounced ANK-ki-low-sing spon-di-LIE-tisis a chronic inflammatory disease. AS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joints, mainly in the spine. This immune response causes inflammation, which contributes to pain and stiffness in these joints. This is known as inflammatory back pain. Because AS is a chronic disease, there is no known cure, and the focus is on controlling symptoms. If left untreated, over time the pain and stiffness of AS can become persistent and can occur in other parts of the body.

The AS symptom quiz will help you identify if the back pain and stiffness youre experiencing could be ankylosing spondylitis, so you can partner with your doctor to develop a treatment plan thats right for you.

    Ankylosing Spondylitis Treatment May Include:

    Humira and joint pain
    • MedicationsAs with more common osteoarthritis, treatment often begins with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications . Although most patients’ symptoms respond well to anti-inflammatory medication, these drugs do not treat the underlying disease. Sometimes medications are not strong enough.Unlike osteoarthritis, in inflammatory arthritis, certain medications can affect the actual disease. For example, TNF-blocking drugs may help block a protein that can cause inflammation . Adalimumab , etanercept and ixekizumab are three types of TNF-blockers that may stop disease progression.
    • Physical therapy, therapeutic exercise Physical therapy stresses proper posture, joint mobility, and deep breathing. Some patients may develop forward posture therefore, postural training and extension exercise is helpful. Stretching and range of motion exercise helps keep the facet and rib joints mobile. Additionally, deep breathing expands the chest and aids lung function.

    • Ankylosing spondylitis affects males two to three times more commonly than females.
    • Ankylosing spondylitis is a cause of back pain in adolescents and young adults.
    • The tendency to develop ankylosing spondylitis is genetically inherited.
    • The HLA-B27 gene can be detected in the blood of most patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
    • Ankylosing spondylitis can also affect the eyes, heart, lungs, and occasionally the kidneys.
    • The optimal treatment of ankylosing spondylitis involves medications that reduce inflammation or suppress immunity, physical therapy, and exercise.

    Humira For Ulcerative Colitis

Humira is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe ulcerative colitis in adults thats active. Active means that you have symptoms. You mustve already tried drugs called immunosuppressants, but they didnt work for you. Examples of these immunosuppressants include 6-mercaptopurine , azathioprine, and corticosteroids.

Humira wasnt studied in people with UC who had previously used other TNF blocker drugs.

The goal of Humira is to help you reach remission, which is a time when your symptoms ease, become less frequent, or disappear.

    UC explained

UC is a form of inflammatory bowel disease, which is a type of disease that affects your digestive tract. With UC, you have inflammation of the lining of your large intestine , rectum, or both.

The inflammation results in tiny sores, called ulcers, throughout the lining of your colon. This causes your bowels to move their contents rapidly and empty frequently. As a result, you may have symptoms such as diarrhea, belly pain, malnutrition , weight loss, and bloody stools.

Its thought that UC results from an overactive immune system. Humira treats UC by blocking a protein called TNF. This decreases the activity of your immune system, leading to a reduction in the number and severity of colon ulcers.

    Humira For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Humira is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis thats active in adults. Active means that you have symptoms. The goal of Humira is to significantly ease signs and symptoms of RA and help limit joint damage and improve mobility.

RA is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint pain and inflammation throughout your body. Autoimmune means that your immune system mistakenly attacks your body. With RA, there are often periods of flare-ups, in which symptoms occur or get worse, and periods of remission, times when symptoms disappear.

Humira treats RA by blocking a protein called TNF. This decreases the activity of your immune system, leading to a reduction in the number and severity of RA symptoms.

    Effectiveness for rheumatoid arthritis

Humira has been proven effective for treating RA in adults.

Clinical studies of people with RA compared Humira with a placebo. In some studies, people also took methotrexate with either Humira or a placebo. Researchers wanted to see how effective Humira was at helping people achieve a 20%, 50%, or 70% reduction in the severity and number RA symptoms. Across these studies, researchers found that Humira was more effective than the placebo.

In two studies, 12% to 21% of people who took Humira by itself or with methotrexate had a 70% reduction in the severity and number of RA symptoms after 6 months. This was compared with just 2% to 3% of people who took a placebo by itself or with methotrexate.

Biologics must be delivered into tissue just under the skin or deep into muscle. Theyre not available in pill or oral form. You receive them through injections or infusions.

The frequency of injections or infusions needed will vary depending on the particular biologic therapy.

You may receive an infusion every few months. Or, you may require multiple starter injections and then follow-up injections throughout the year.

For example, the biologic Simponi requires three starter injections:

    • two injections on the first day of treatment
    • one injection 2 weeks later

Afterward, youll give yourself one injection every 4 weeks.

On the other hand, if you take Humira, youll give yourself one injection every other week after four starter doses.

Your doctor will tell you how often youll need biologic therapy, and theyll give you instructions on how to administer your injections.

Biologics dont improve symptoms of AS overnight, but you should begin to feel better in about 4 to 12 weeks, sometimes sooner.

The goal of treatment is to suppress your symptoms so that the condition doesnt interfere with your life. Its important to note that biologics wont cure AS.

What Are Ankylosing Spondylitis Treatment Options

The treatment of ankylosing spondylitis typically involves the use of medications to reduce inflammation and/or suppress immunity to stop progression of the disease, physical therapy, and exercise. Medications decrease inflammation in the spine and other joints and organs. Physical therapy and exercise help improve posture, spine mobility, and lung capacity.

Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used to decrease pain and stiffness of the spine and other joints. Commonly used NSAIDs include indomethacin , tolmetin , sulindac , naproxen , and diclofenac . Their common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and even bleeding ulcers. These medicines are frequently taken with food in order to minimize side effects.

Medical research has shown that for persistent ankylosing spondylitis with spinal involvement that is unresponsive to anti-inflammatory medications, both sulfasalazine and methotrexate are ineffective. Newer, effective medications for spine disease attack a messenger protein of inflammation called tumor necrosis factor . These TNF-blocking medications have been shown to be extremely effective for treating ankylosing spondylitis by stopping disease activity, decreasing inflammation, and improving spinal mobility. Examples of these TNF-blockers include etanercept , infliximab , adalimumab , and golimumab . In 2016, adalimumab was approved for the treatment of uveitis .
