What Do Chiropractors Do For Back Pain
If youre wondering whether or not a chiropractor is worth it, consider what chiropractors can and cannot do for back pain. A chiropractor can treat certain conditions causing back pain. In most cases, a chiropractor will address acute pain and stiffness.
Acute pain has an exact cause and is self-limited. For instance, if you tweak a nerve in your back while moving furniture, a chiropractor may be able to help relieve your pain. Many patients seek chiropractic adjustment after a sports injury, car accident or other instance of acute pain.
What Else Is Involved In Chiropractic Care
Chiropractors will spend a lot of their time talking with and listening to their patients, especially during the free consultation.
Your chiropractor will want to discuss your overall health, including flexibility, strength-building, and balance.
Your chiropractor will also take a look at your ergonomics.
They will ask you what you do for work, and they’ll take a look at how you bend, turn, and lift.
They’ll need to know if you ride in a car all day or spend most of your time sitting in front of a computer.
They do this to understand what may be contributing to the back pain or any other symptoms you are experiencing.
Chiropractors will even spend time offering their patients words of encouragement and advice on exercises and stretches.
They’ll let them what they can do, or if a patient is unable to do something, they’ll offer an alternative.
That way, you aren’t anticipating pain and causing more pain and muscle spasms.
Pain scientists have discovered that anticipation of pain can lead to more pain, muscle spasms, headaches, and so forth.
So assuring their patients that there’s another way is essential.
The goal of most chiropractors is to return people to the activities that are necessary for their lives.
They don’t want back pain to interfere with their day to day lives, whether it’s job-related, family or socially oriented, or recreational.
Active people are more healthy and happier.
What Are Some Other Aspects Of Chiropractic Care
I spend about 20 to 25% of my time talking with and listening to my patients. We talk about flexibility we talk about strength-building we talk about balance. I look at your ergonomics: What do you do for work? How do you bend, turn, lift? Do you ride in a car all day? Do you sit in front of a computer? I try to understand what may be contributing to the pain or other symptoms you may be experiencing.
Often, Im trying to help patients by encouraging them: Yes, you can do this, or When something like this happens, try to do this instead of that. That way, theyre not anticipating pain and causing more pain and more muscle spasms. Pain scientists have found that anticipation of pain can lead to more episodes, more muscle spasms, more headaches, and so forth. So, teaching patients how to think about pain is important.
Our goals focus largely on returning people to the activities that are important in their lives, whether those are job-related, family or socially oriented, or recreational in nature. Active people are healthier and happier.

A Recent Study On Chiropractic Care For Low Back Pain
A 2018 study published in JAMA Network Open is among the latest to weigh in on the pros and cons of chiropractic care for treating low back pain. Researchers enrolled 750 active-duty military personnel who complained of back pain. Half were randomly assigned to receive usual care while the other half received usual care plus up to 12 chiropractic treatments.
After six weeks of treatment, those assigned to receive chiropractic care:
- reported less pain intensity
- experienced less disability and more improvement in function
- reported higher satisfaction with their treatment
- needed less pain medicine.
While no serious side effects were reported, about 10% of those receiving chiropractic care described adverse effects . Five percent of those receiving usual care had similar complaints.
When Should I See A Chiropractor For Back Pain

What Is A Herniated Disc
When you jump, run, or move from side to side, you have discs that work as a cushion to support your upper and lower back. Otherwise, these complex movements wouldnt be possible.
But, without those discs, your spine couldnt function the way it does, and humans couldnt transport themselves the way they do.
Perhaps you have heard the term slipped disc. It is not a scientific term, but its used to describe the spines bulging, rupturing, or herniation. The correct medical time is herniated disc, which we will subsequently use in this article.
So, what exactly happens when one suffers from a herniated disc?
First, we must fully understand the constituent parts of the vertebrae above.
The composition comes from two components:
The outer layer of the discs prevents the nucleus pulposus from pushing out.
If the annulus fibrosus becomes damaged and the center becomes compressed due to physical activity, it can exude, causing herniated discs or even painful nerve damage to patients. People involved in motorcycle crashes, car collisions, or other vehicle accidents often suffer from bulging discs.
Lifting heavy materials incorrectly, as well as intense contact sports, can also influence your disc health and cause issues to occur.
The Symptoms Are Consistent With A Potential Pinched Nerve
The spinal structure provides tight quarters for the nerves, spinal discs, cartilage, and other structural components. When a disc bulges out of place or another structure intrudes on the space naturally filled by a nerve, that nerve is pinched. It isnt able to effectively send and receive messages to maintain communication with the brain. A pinched nerve is one of the leading causes of lower back pain.
Nerve pain is typically sharp and may get worse with certain types of movement. Many patients also report numbness, and others experience the sensation of needles prickling their skin from within. Since nerves run from the lower spine into the legs, its possible to feel pain in the legs or numbness in the feet.
Since the nerve is often pinched by bone or other hard tissue, chiropractic treatment is often effective. A chiropractor will identify the cause of the pinched nerve and work to reposition the interfering bone, ease tension from tight muscles, and otherwise manipulate the body so that the nerve has more room to function properly.

Why Is Good Posture Important
Good posture can have an immediate effect on your appearance. Youll look taller, healthier, and more confident.
But there are a lot of less visible health benefits that you should know. Here are a few:
- Proper alignment of bones and joints
- Reduced stress on ligaments
- Reduced wear on the muscles and joints
- Improved digestion
How do you know if your posture is bad? Typically, people with poor posture have hunched or arched shoulders, a rounded upper back, and an arched lower back. You also might notice back pain.
There are a lot of reasons you might have poor posture. These can include stress, weight gain, pregnancy, weak postural muscles, tight muscles, previous injuries, low confidence, or a history of wearing high-heeled shoes or heavy backpacks.
Whatever the case, bad posture can lead to pain, headaches, an increased risk of injury, and more. It can even cause you to age faster.
But in most cases, posture can be fixed. Treatment from a chiropractor can help people regain their youthful and healthy posture.
The Pain Is Generated From Hard Tissue Rather Than Soft Muscular Tissue
The medical industry classifies pain according to the points of the body impacted and the structural tissue involved. Pain that is created by injury to soft tissue like the muscles is often treated effectively through massage therapy, but pain generated from hard tissue is more likely to require spinal manipulation or other techniques best performed by a well-trained chiropractor.
The spine and joints are two examples of hard tissue that may lead to lower back pain. Tightness and sharp pain caused by spinal misalignment isnt easily relieved through massage alone, so visiting a chiropractor is essential. Other conditions may involve unspecified tissue, and most patients find that treatment by a chiropractor is the fastest and most consistent route to relieve.

In some cases, you may have better results if you see a spine specialist instead of a chiropractor. Spine specialists understand the intricacies of the central nervous system. They can help you determine the underlying cause of your back pain, whether its a slipped disc, pinched nerve or arthritis. If necessary, theyll handle any minimally invasive surgeries you might need to address the root cause of your back pain.

Can Chiropractic Care Catch On
Back or neck pain is common among adults in the United States not just those in the military and both patients and physicians are looking for better ways to treat pain.
Recent Gallup studies found that about 1 in 4 adults saw a medical professional for neck or back pain in the last year and 65 percent sought care at some point during their lives.
The American College of Physicians, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the Joint Commission all recommend nondrug therapies for back pain as an initial treatment approach, Goertz said.
Yet, I am hearing that the use of these therapies, including chiropractic care, has not increased since these guidelines were issued, she added.
But research shows that patients are becoming wary of pills as a single solution. At least 78 percent of American adults would like to try ways other than medication to relieve their pain, according to Gallup.
A 2016 study Goertz contributed to showed that about 14 percent of people have seen a chiropractor in the last year. Of those with significant neck or back pain, 33 percent said chiropractic care was safest compared with 12 percent who say pain medications are safer , according to Gallup data. Also, 29 percent say chiropractic care is more effective than pain medication for those who have neck or back pain, while 22 percent preferred medication over chiropractic care.
So why are some Americans still popping pills when a chiropractic adjustment may be just as, or even more, effective?

What Is Chiropractic And How Can It Fix Low Back Pain
Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments, the theory being that proper alignment of the bodys musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication.
Chiropractic is mainly used as a Low Back Pain fix for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissues. Chiropractors typically apply pressure to particular joint segments along the spine that are not accurately aligned. This produces a popping noise similar to the sound made by cracking your knuckles. The noise comes from a change in pressure with-in your joints as gas bubbles are released.
By correcting the spinal position with their hands at precise scientific pressure points, chiropractors disentangle nerve energy and allow it to better flow down your spine and throughout the entire body to aid in healing and communication. Repeated visits over time can realign your spine and amend many health conditions.
In addition to a hands-on approach, chiropractors will often instruct their patients to administer healthy habits at home. Includes lower back exercises, stretches, and nutrition plans. Managing a healthy weight can also aid in a fast recovery to lower back pain. Your diet can also play a role in the inflammation throughout your body. Certain foods and eating habits can help control your health.Whatever type of back pain you are experiencing chiropractors are correctly trained and highly educated in assisting your pain.
Should You See A Chiropractor For Low Back Pain
If youve ever seen a doctor for back pain, youre not alone. An estimated 85% of people experience back pain severe enough to see a doctor for at some point in their life. Yet despite how common it is, the precise cause of pain is often unclear. And a single, best treatment for most low back pain is unknown. For these reasons, doctors recommendations tend to vary. “Standard care” includes a balance of rest, stretching and exercise, heat, pain relievers, and time. Some doctors also suggest trying chiropractic care. The good news is that no matter what treatment is recommended, most people with a recent onset of back pain are better within a few weeks often within a few days.

What Types Of Chiropractic Treatments Do You Offer
I primarily use manual manipulation. That means I use my hands to try to improve movement in your spine. If I can improve joint mobility in a certain area — the spine, neck, middle back, lower back, pelvis — it may reduce muscle tightness. It can also help with irritation of nerves that travel down the arm or leg, causing numbness or tingling, pain, or even changes in strength. I sometimes use other therapies as well, such as giving people exercise instructions or self-care recommendations.
