Whats The Role Of Chiropractic Care

First Time Chiropractic Adjustment for Severe Lower Back Pain & Sacroiliac Pain Gets Relief

Some doctors refer back pain sufferers to a physical therapist right away. But many people with back pain see acupuncturists, massage therapists, or a chiropractor on their own. Experts disagree about the role of chiropractic care, and there are not many high-quality studies to consult about this approach. As a result, there are a number of questions regarding the role of chiropractic care: Should it be a routine part of initial care? Should it be reserved for people who dont improve with other treatments? Are some people more likely to improve with chiropractic care than others?

The answers to these questions go beyond any academic debate about how good chiropractic care is. Estimates suggest that low back pain costs up to $200 billion a year in the US , and its a leading cause of disability worldwide. With the backdrop of the opioid crisis, we badly need an effective, safe, and non-opioid alternative to treat low back pain.

What Does Chiropractic Treatment For Back Pain Involve

A chiropractor first takes a medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine if treatment is appropriate for your back pain.

The treatment plan may involve one or more manual adjustments in which the doctor manipulates the joints, using a controlled, sudden force to improve range and quality of motion. Many chiropractors also incorporate nutritional counseling and exercise/rehabilitation into the treatment plan. The goals of chiropractic care include the restoration of function and prevention of injury in addition to back pain relief.

Acute Vs Chronic Pain

Whats the difference between these two types of pain? Chronic back pain often results from a disease such as arthritis, cancer, neuropathy, and autoimmune diseases. It is generally defined as lasting for more than six months. Acute back pain, on the other hand, is what happens when you lift a heavy object and strain a muscle, slip and fall on an icy sidewalk, get tackled in a friendly game of football, or experience another kind of accident.

Acute pain usually subsides within a few weeks but may resolve more quickly with treatment. Some of the ways to address and alleviate acute pain include chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage, aqua therapy, electrical stimulation, and heat or cold therapy.

Although many people feel that they should stay immobile and rest when they are experiencing pain, thats actually not the best approach. In fact, while it might be tempting to lounge in bed or relax on the couch and have others wait on you, that might do more harm than good. Moving around sends blood and nutrients to the affected area. This, in turn, helps keep inflammation at a minimum and prevents additional muscle tension.

Its important to realize that narcotic painkillers, muscle relaxants, and even over-the-counter analgesics will not help a patients pain to resolve. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, can reduce inflammation, but otherwise, these medications will only mask the problem.

You Sit For Extended Periods Of Time

Lower back pain doesnt just stem from a traumatic physical injury. Sometimes, sitting for extended periods of time, especially hunched over a desk, can take a toll on a persons spine. Sitting for too long in misaligned positions can gradually alter the normal curve of the lower back. This misalignment leads to stiffness and nerve interference which can cause neck and lower back pain. A chiropractor can detect imbalances in the body and correct them with specialized techniques.

Chiropractic For Lower Back Pain:

Low Back Stretch

At Urban Wellness Clinic, our approach to chiropractic treatment for back pain centers on aligning the spine and joints for a healthy network of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. In turn, we ease pressure on slipped discs and nerves, improve flexibility, and reduce muscle tension. Being movement specialists we also focus on what joints are not moving enough or are stuck and which joints are too mobile leading to instability.

First, we perform a physical evaluation to assess lower back pain symptoms and determine the cause of back aches or chronic back pain. Then we use chiropractic adjustments and massage, specifically Active Release Technique, to treat lower back pain.

We may use the osseous adjustment, which involves gentle manipulation of the spine to relieve muscle tension and restore range of motion of the joint. This chiropractic treatment for lower back pain addresses misaligned and contracted muscles and connective tissue. The high velocity, low amplitude adjustment gives a quick stretch to the ligaments and the joint capsule creating a neurologic reflex that helps temporarily relax the muscles in the area. We always end with rehabilitation exercises and create stability so the joints that were just treated dont get pulled out of alignment.

Efficacy Of Spinal Manipulation For Low Back Pain Has Not Been Reliably Shown

EditorIn their editorial1-1 Ernst and Assendelft refer to a review by Shekelle et al, which concludes that spinal manipulation is of short-term benefit in some patients, particularly those with uncomplicated, acute low-back pain.1-2 Ernst and Assendelft point out that this work did not contain a single trial of chiropractic. The references in the review by Shekelle et al do in fact include chiropractic trials.1-2 The second reference listed is the trial by Meade et al.1-3

The second paragraph of the editorial refers to a review by Assendelft et al of eight randomised controlled trials of chiropractic treatment. This review concludes that the eight trials provide no convincing evidence for the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for acute or chronic low back pain.1-4 Therefore, readers are left with the impression that chiropractic treatment is less effective than manipulation in general. Had the authors included a seventh reference to their own worka review of spinal manipulation for low back pain1-5 published in the same year as the review of the chiropractic trialsit would have changed readers impression altogether. This document reviews 36 randomised clinical trials comparing manipulation with other treatments and concludes that the efficacy of spinal manipulation for patients with acute or chronic low back pain has not been demonstrated with sound randomised clinical trials.1-5

Back pain is often chronic and it may range from mild to debilitating. Whether its from an acute injury, poor posture, work-related strain, or aging, lower back pain can reduce your quality of life and make even basic daily tasks difficult and painful. Many people who have no sign of spinal abnormalities on X-rays still suffer from excruciating pain that may include sensitivity to pressure, pain after prolonged activity, stiffness, cramping, muscle spasms, and pain that gets progressively worse and lasts longer.

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek out chiropractic care, a holistic approach that can target the cause of your pain instead of the symptom for safe and natural pain relief.

Are There Risks To Chiropractic Treatment

Any treatment method has inherent risks, but professional chiropractic complications are uncommon. In rare instances, patients have experienced worsened herniated discs or compression of the spinal nerves. Of course, self-performed chiropractics are riskier since patients may apply too much force or adjust their joints too often. Thats why its best to see a licensed professional for chiropractic care.

The Effectiveness Of A Chiropractic For Lower Back Pain

Many people who seek chiropractic care do it for back pain treatments near them. However, back pain and neck pain are chiropractic care specialties.

People who try chiropractic treatments have less pain intensity, improved functionality, and less disability. They also have high satisfaction with their treatments and needless pain medicine.

Chiropractic treatments rarely cause side effects as compared to medications. This makes chiropractic care a great alternative for people who have taken heavy medications but still experience persistent pain.

Chiropractors strive to diagnose and correct biomechanical disturbances and nervous system blockages. These impairments and/or blockages often create irritating symptoms such as inflammation, tension, pain, numbness, muscle spasms, and joint mobility restrictions, all of which may have an impact on the body as a whole.

Chiropractors use their hands, knees, and elbows to manually adjust and twist a person’s spine and joints to alter the body’s nervous system and natural defensive mechanisms. Through these practices, they can relieve pain, relax muscles, reduce pressure on nerves, increase general health, and even encourage the body’s natural healing process. Chiropractic care can be incredibly helpful in relieving all kinds of pain, especially back pain.

Chiropractors can help alleviate pain throughout your body. You might consider seeing a chiropractor if you:

  • Experience acute neck, back or knee pain: Chiropractors can help address acute pain on or related to the spine. If you experience acute pain in your neck, back or knee, chiropractic treatment might be right for you.
  • Experience tension headaches or migraines: Research shows spinal manipulation can reduce migraines and alleviate tension headaches.

Chiropractic Addresses The Entire Body

Lower back pain – A Chiropractors view

How common is chiropractic care? Approximately 22 million Americans visit the chiropractor each year. Of that number, about a third 35% do so in the hopes of finding relief for their back pain.

However, chiropractic adjustments can be effective for many different issues. These include:

  • Headaches and migraines

Chiropractic care also helps alleviate stress and tension. It has even been shown to boost the immune system. Plenty of people who do not suffer from chronic pain visit the chiropractor regularly. They want to keep their body in alignment and allow their energy to flow freely.

It might not seem as though cracking your spine or moving your limbs about could help with issues arising elsewhere in the body. However, chiropractic care is holistic and affects the entire system. You might be surprised at what a difference it can make in your overall physical condition and well-being!

Chiropractic Care Relieves Pain

Our roleas chiropractorsis to work on areas of misalignment in the spine and limbs to ease this distress. Through gentle force chiropractic and a whole-body approach to wellbeing, we can encourage the body to healphysically, emotionally, and mentally.

The Research

We both know that pain medication is a quick fix, right? It can be extremely effective, but it doesnt address the underlying cause of your pain. Self-care is important, but it doesnt replace professional treatment and advice. Physical therapy is a valuable tool, as part of a comprehensive health plan.

A 2018 study backed up the need for professional chiropractic care for treating lower back pain.

  • 750 active-duty military personnelall suffering from lower back painwere split into two groups. Group A received pain medication, instructions for self-care, and physical therapy treatments. Group B received the same careplus 12 chiropractic treatments over a six-week period.
  • At the end of the study, group B reported reduced pain intensity, improved function, lower use of pain medication, and a more positive perception of their pain symptoms.

The Pain Is Generated From Hard Tissue Rather Than Soft Muscular Tissue

The medical industry classifies pain according to the points of the body impacted and the structural tissue involved. Pain that is created by injury to soft tissue like the muscles is often treated effectively through massage therapy, but pain generated from hard tissue is more likely to require spinal manipulation or other techniques best performed by a well-trained chiropractor.

The spine and joints are two examples of hard tissue that may lead to lower back pain. Tightness and sharp pain caused by spinal misalignment isnt easily relieved through massage alone, so visiting a chiropractor is essential. Other conditions may involve unspecified tissue, and most patients find that treatment by a chiropractor is the fastest and most consistent route to relieve.

How Long Does Chiropractic Adjustment Last

Natural Treatment Options For Your Lower Back Problems

A chiropractic visit typically lasts for up to 30 minutes. An introductory visit typically lasts longer than a routine visit.

Do you feel immediate relief after chiropractic adjustment?

According to some that get spinal adjustments, the effects can be felt immediately, and the patient will feel reenergized. Most of the time those that see these results didnt have a significant issue with their spinal alignment, and simply needed a reset to release the tension that they were feeling.

How do you know if a chiropractor is working?

For the most part, people will start to feel relief after their first few visits, if not the first chiropractic visit. Estimates have 60% of patients feeling relief after their first visit, while 30% of patients take two to three trips to feel relief.
