Have Other Groups Questioned The Effectiveness Of Back Belts

NIOSH is not alone in questioning the effectiveness of back belts. Other institutions issuing similar statements include the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Bureau of Mines, the Army Office of the Surgeon General, the State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries, the Alberta Ministry of Occupational Health and Safety , the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, and the Construction Safety Association of Ontario.

How To Safely Deadlift With Your Lower Back

Proper form is key to preventing back injury when weight liftingespecially if you want to prevent injury to the lower back area. Here are some tips on how to prevent a back injury while weight lifting.

  • Make sure your back is in a neutral position before you lift the weight. Bending, rounding, or arching your back will put pressure on your spinal discs, and it can potentially cause back strain and injury. Youll also strengthen your back more effectively with proper form.
  • Before you commit to the lift, lock your back into a neutral position. Dont just feel it settlecommit to it against the weight. Pull your chest up, ab muscles in, and focus on your breathing. Make sure to hold that breath before you make the pull and repeat between each repetition.
  • Flex your lateral muscles and lock them there. This stabilizes your upper back and prevents upper back weight lifting injuries.
  • Squeeze the glute muscles. Yes, you need to feel that firmness in your posterior. Thats the final confirmation that youve locked into that proper position.
  • Your hips and legs should be doing most of the work here, but dont worrythis exercise strengthens your lower back. Think of it as your number one support.

As you can see, your technique isnt just important because of its effectiveness, but for the health of your spine. Lower back pain is one of the most common recurring complaints we hear from weightlifters.

Due to the sedentary lifestyle, back pain has become one of the common issues faced by millions of people worldwide. It can even make it difficult to carry out simple daily activities.

In majority of cases, poor posture is the leading reason for back pain. If the muscles that usually support the spine dont get enough activity and straightening, they get inactive and cause back pain. Even if your back pain is due to discs or spine injuries then poor posture can worsen the condition.

Practicing good posture can be of a great help to ease the pain. For this reason, many physicians recommend using back braces or back belts to manage the pain. But not all back belts available in the market are good enough to support your back health.

After an extensive research and testing, below are the top back belts that we have tried personally and highly recommend

How Should Workers Be Protected

Rather than relying solely on back belts, companies should begin to implement a comprehensive ergonomics program that strives to protect all workers. The most effective way to prevent back injury is to redesign the work environment and work tasks to reduce the hazards of lifting. Training in identifying lifting hazards and using safe lifting techniques and methods should improve program effectiveness.

If you are putting all your prevention resources into back belts, you are not adequately protecting your workers.

What Is The Purpose Of This Pamphlet

Back injuries account for nearly 20% of all injuries and illnesses in the workplace and cost the nation an estimated 20 to 50 billion dollars per year. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health believes that the most effective way to prevent back injury is to implement an ergonomics program that focuses on redesigning the work environment and work tasks to reduce the hazards of lifting.

However, in response to the increasing human and economic costs of back injury, companies have implemented numerous other measures, either in conjunction with or in place of sound ergonomics programs. For instance, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of industrial back belts.

The decision to wear a back belt is a personal choice however, NIOSH believes that workers and employers should have the best available information to make that decision. This pamphlet outlines the current state of scientific knowledge on back belts and stresses the importance of an overall ergonomics program. Companies should not rely on back belts as a cure all for back injury, but should begin to undertake prevention measures which reduce the risks of lifting tasks.

What Spinal Decompression Is

Spinal decompression is a form of mechanical spinal traction, which refers to the separation of the bones, joints, and discs of the back. It is theorized that this separation relieves pressure on the nerves in the back and helps decrease pain, and thus, improve function.

Many spinal decompression systems are operated by the use of a computer, allowing the healthcare provider to adjust the amount of traction force, the angle of traction provided, or the amount of time the traction force is applied. Common trade names of spinal decompression devices are the VAX-D System, the SpinalAid System, and the DRX-9000 System, among others.

Some spinal decompression units require that you lie on your stomach while treatment is rendered others have you lie on your back.

How To Prevent Low Back Injuries

Low Back Support Belt For Low Back Pain Relief

Back belts might seem like a quick fix for your low back injury problem. But I assure you, its not the silver bullet solution you might be hoping it is.

Back belts dont reduce problems with the work environment . For example, a job with a Lifting Index of 3 isnt fixed by simply having a worker put on a back belt.

And back belts dont reduce problems with the workers themselves . For example, a worker who uses improper body mechanics isnt fixed by simply having them put on a back belt.

The bottom line is this: If youre putting all your prevention resources into back belts, you are not adequately protecting your workers. The best way to prevent low back injuries is to identify and reduce all contributing risk factors.

Focus your efforts on removing problems in your work environment with an ergonomics process, training your workplace athletes on how to work smarter, and responding to early reports of fatigue and discomfort as soon as possible so you can get to the root of the problem.

An Ounce Of Prevention

As a newbie lifter, nothing is more important than form.

Think of it as an investment into preventing an injury. The more time you research about lifting mechanics means less time nursing an injury. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Always start with lower weights and ask other experienced lifters for help. You can take a video of yourself and post it on a forum like r/weightlifting to get feedback. If you go too hard with the weights and dont have proper form, you could injure yourself.

My friend got lucky with his injury. Unfortunately, many people will not recover from a lower back injury.

How Back Supports May Be Of Benefit

The best they can do with respect to preventing low back injury is that by wearing them you are reminded to lift properly. The back support belt has nothing to do with prevention directly. The belt merely makes you more consciously aware that you need to be careful lifting and perhaps it cues you to use proper lifting form and technique.

Not only do back belts not directly prevent lower back lifting injuries, they may even be harmful in the long term and end up causing lower back injuries. How?

Do Magnets Help Relieve Low Back Pain

March 7, 2000 — Treating people with chronic low back pain with one particular type of magnet did not help relieve the patients’ pain, a study in the March 8 issue of TheJournal of the American Medical Association reports. But experts say that much more research is needed on magnet therapy before concluding that it doesn’t work.

Magnet therapy is an alternative medicine that has become increasingly popular for healing and reducing pain. Worldwide, $5 billion has been spent on magnets to treat everything from back pain to headaches. But very little research has been done to determine whether magnet therapy actually works.

“Magnets have been around for a very long time,” says the study’s lead author, Edward Collacott, MD. “There are reports that Cleopatra slept with a magnet on her forehead to help preserve her youth, and certainly we are seeing large numbers of people using them today. Even though we did not observe a reduction in low back pain with magnet use in our study, I am not prepared to say they don’t work. Right now I would say that if people are having success with them in treating their condition, they shouldn’t use this study as evidence to throw them out.” Collacott is medical director for physical medicine and rehabilitation at the VA Medical Center in Prescott, Ariz.

The researchers refused to reveal the manufacturer of the magnets used in the study, so WebMD contacted BIOflex Medical Magnetics Inc., one manufacturer of magnets used for therapy.

Leg Tingling And Numbness

Did you get that annoying leg tingling and numbness? It might be your belt, again.

Not only can tight belts be uncomfortable , but they can also cause burning pain, numbness, sensitivity at a light touch and tingling in the legs. This is a condition known as meralgia paresthetica. Dont bother pronouncing it, but be aware that this is exactly what a tight belt does to your nerves.

Pros Of Using Back Support Belts

Back Pain: Are back belts helpful? Do they work?
  • Providing Back Support. People who wear back support belts claim that during periods of lower back pain, their back support belt provides extra support when switching between lying down, sitting, and standing.
  • Limits Movement. If you’ve had a back injury, too much movement can limit your body’s ability to heal. Back support belts, similar to a neck brace, limit movement and range of motion so that your body has a chance to heal properly.
  • Reduces Pain. Some back support belts have heating elements, and some have massaging capabilities. Both heat and massaging back support belts can help to relieve back pain.
  • Improves Posture. Back support belt users claim that when wearing their back support belt that they can more easily maintain a better posture with a straighter back instead of slouching over with a rounder back.

How Back Pain Can Be Diagnosed

When you consult with the doctor, the doctor will do some physical tests to diagnose back pain or lumbar disc herniation. While doing the physical test, the doctor will evaluate your:

  • Ability to walk and stand.
  • Motion rate of your spine.
  • Reflexes.
  • The strength of your leg.
  • Whether you can feel sensations in your leg or not.

If all the tests come out positive, the doctor may go for some other tests, such as:

  • Blood and urine tests to know about the underlying conditions.
  • X-rays of the spine to know the alignment of your bones and check for lumbar spinal stenosis.
  • Computed tomography scan or MRI to assess your disks, muscles, ligaments, nerves, etc. located in the lumbar area.
  • Scanning of bone to detect any abnormalities in the bone tissue.
  • EMG to examine the nerve conduction.

Back Support For Golfers

Relative to spine health and safety, the golf swing is unnatural, with twisting , weight-bearing , and bending . Whether hitting a bucket of balls, packing your bag for eighteen holes or even using a cart, the majority of golfers still finish a round needing the comforts of the nineteenth hole to take their mind off their sore back.

The cause is primarily postural. During the swing, most golfers change their spine angle significantly during every swing. Deviating from a neutral spinal curve stretches spinal tissues and compresses disks unnaturally hence the end-of-round pain or stiffness. Maintaining the optimum spine angle during the entire swing minimizes the risk. Think about it if you have the same spine angle at setup as at ball-strike, you should hit it on the screws! No matter how perfect your arm-slot, the spine dictates how far away you are from the ball. Same distance, better results.
