When Is Surgery A Good Idea For Back Pain

How to Relieve Lower Back Pain IN SECONDS

These red flags can be indicators for surgery, if theyre found to berelated to your spine condition:

  • New or progressing bowel/bladder issues
  • Weakness in limbs
  • Gait and balance problems
  • Evidence of increased reflexes

Surgery can also be an option for chronic back pain if there is a knowncause confirmed by imaging and if other treatments didnt help. Getopinions from at least two surgeons, suggests Nava, as pain can stillcome back after the surgery.

Other Conditions Causing Lower Back Pain

There are many causes of back pain. Overuse injuries are a very common source of lower back pain and stiffness. However this usually goes away after a few days. Others causes of chronic pain include:

  • Spondylolisthesis. Normal wear and tear makes it hard for your joints and ligaments to keep your spine in the proper position, especially as we age. When a vertebrae moves more than it should, it can slide forward and on top of another. When this happens, bones can press on the spinal nerves and cause lower back pain.
  • Vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis
  • Spinal stenosis. A narrowing of the spine space around the spinal cord can put pressure on nerves. The narrowing is typically caused by bone spurs that have developed as a result of osteoarthritis.
  • Scoliosis. An abnormal curvature of the spine can cause back pain.

Less commonly, low back pain can be a sign of a serious medical condition, such as diabetes or a pinched nerve. In the case of a pinched nerve, the pain may be accompanied by symptoms like fever, chills, night sweats, or loss of bladder control.

Achieve A Healthy Weight

More than 70 percent of people in the U.S. are overweight and nearly 40 percent are considered obese. Carrying extra weight can significantly strain your back muscles and spine.

Losing weight can be difficult however, doing so can help control your back pain, prevent the condition from getting worse, and even potentially eliminate the need for pain medication or surgery. If you need help losing weight, request an appointment.

“There are many alternative treatments for back pain, many of which are easy to do at home and affordable, with no doctors prescription necessary.”

Avoid Prolonged Static Posture

It is important to pay attention to the joints and muscles of your spine and hip. Prevent fatigue and stresses on these joints by following simple tips, such as:

  • Avoid excessive sitting or consider using a standing desk while you work. When you sit for a long duration, the pressure on your spinal discs increase. Aim to get up every hour and walk a short distance to take the load off your discs.

When you have a flare-up of symptoms, consider less exertive activities, such as reading a book, listening to music, or crafting. These activities can help divert your mind from the pain and let your back rest at the same time.

Why Is Lower Back Pain Such A Common Problem

Lower back pain exercises you can do at the comfort of your home

The bottom part of your back typically has just five vertebrae fewer than your neck and mid-back. And these vertebrae do a lot of heavy lifting! Your lower back is where your spine connects to your pelvis, bearing the weight of your upper body. This area experiences a lot of movement and stress, which may lead to wear, tear and injuries.

When To Seek Medical Help:

Back pain might resolve in a few weeks in most people with adequate self-care. Nine out of ten people might recover from back pain after two months. However, if the condition gets worse, seek medical help.1Immediate medical attention is necessary in the following conditions:

  • Lack of sensation in upper or lower limbs
  • Loss of limb movement
  • Tingling or numbness in legs
  • No control of bowel or bladder
  • The back pain doesnt improve even after weeks or gets worse
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you have osteoporosis .1 You should not depend on home remedies alone for the treatment of back pain. You need to consult a qualified doctor for advice if the symptoms do not improve with home remedies.

Stretch #3 Lumbar Rotation

This is the first stretch in the series that is progressive assuming the previous movements were tolerable.

Laying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat, put your knees and feet together as if you had a mermaid tail. Next, take a deep breath in a and as you exhale slowly drop your knees to the side, inhale bringing the legs back up to the starting position and exhale again as you drop them to the other side.

You do not need to have your knees touch the floor, work within your own pain-free range of motion.

Working this movement side to side creates a rotational motion in the lumbar spine and can help reduce tension if you are trying to fix lower back pain at home. This is a great exercise because it is an unassisted stretch that targets the low back which can be a difficult area to alleviate pain on your own.

Causes Of Lumbar Pain

Lower back pain most often results from

  • Mechanical issues
  • Deteriorating condition
  • Abnormal spinal curvature

If the problem is deterioration or unusual spinal anatomy, deeper tissue injuries can arise such as herniated discs or nerve compression. These complications require professional attention. Never ignore serious symptoms such as severe pain, sudden weakness, shooting nerve pain, numbness or tingling. Do not delay seeking help for unusual symptoms.

Massage With Essential Oils For Pain Relief

How to Fix Your Lower Back Pain for Good

Massaging your skin with certain aromatic essential oils can relieve menstrual cramp pain, according to research published in The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research. Investigators asked 48 women with menstrual cramps and other symptoms to massage either essential oils or a synthetic fragrance into their lower abdomen between periods.

Women in both groups reported less pain, but the essential oils group did better. Based on the womens reports, researchers found that the duration of pain was reduced by almost a half a day after self-massaging with the essential oils.

Some oils thought to be helpful include lavender essential oil, clary sage essential oil, and .

Just be sure youre using essential oils safely. Buy high-quality oils that are tested for purity. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy suggests diluting pure essential oils in an unscented cream, lotion, or carrier oil before placing it on your skin to avoid irritation.

If you have primary dysmenorrhea and a surge in prostaglandins at the beginning of your period is the problem, taking a prostaglandin inhibitor like ibuprofen should help in many cases, Dr. Masterson says. If heavy periods are the main issue, whether thats due to endometriosis, PCOS, or your normal cycle, hormonal birth control pills or injections containing the hormone progesterone can help decrease bleeding, she adds.

Back Aches And Injuries Are Common Among Older Adults But Some Simple Stretches Can Help

by Stacey Colino, AARP, March 17, 2022

Whether its chronic, acute or episodic, low back pain is a common problem among adults, causing more disability around the world than any other condition.

At least one-fourth of U.S. adults report having low back pain in the last three months, national survey data shows. And research suggests that as many as 80 percent of adults will experience low back pain at some point in their lives, meaning if you havent had it yet and you dont have it now, theres a good chance that you will in the future especially since back pain becomes more frequent with advancing age.

Common causes of lower back pain include overuse injuries , muscle or ligament strains or sprains, trauma , degenerative discs, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis, experts say. Another prime culprit: sedentary behavior. A 2019 study in the journal Applied Ergonomics found an association between static sitting behavior and chronic low back pain among people who worked at a call center.

Back Pain Relief At Home

Home Exercise Program for Back Pain Page 3

Most of the time, you can care for lower back pain at home. Try these things to help your back no medication or procedures required.

Get exercise

Dont assume that you should stay in bed until your back feels better.

Avoiding exercise can make back pain worse, Dr. Bolash says.

Patients who rest often fare worse. Try to keep moving and walking around as usual. Movement relieves pain and strengthens your muscles, helping you prevent a future episode of pain.

But dont resume the activity that initially caused the injury until your pain is gone. Once your back feels better, you can ease back into lifting or strenuous exercise, but do it gradually. If you do too much too quickly, you could end up sidelined with back pain all over again.

Use heat or ice for back pain relief

If your pain has just started, consider applying cold packs. The cooling can help decrease swelling and inflammation, Dr. Bolash says. Cold packs can also provide relief by numbing some of the painful nerves.

If swelling or inflammation is subsiding but youre still in pain, consider that some people find a heating pad or a hot bath to be the best thing for back pain, and theres some evidence that it works. Moist heat, like you would get in a hot shower, bath or with a moist heat pack, may work better than dry heat.

Do some yoga

  • Start in a kneeling position.
  • Bring your forehead down to the mat and reach your arms in front of you. If thats not comfortable, move your arms behind you.

    Stretch #5 Hip Flexor Stretch

Building off of the concept of posterior chain it is important to consider the anterior chain as well.

Deficits in strength and flexibility can lead to several issues and lower back pain is most commonly coupled with weak and tight hip flexors. The hip flexors are the iliacus and psoas muscles. They are primarily responsible for lifting the femur into flexion .

When the pelvis is tilted forward through sitting, poor exercise technique, etc. there is a higher likelihood that the hip flexors will be in a shortened position as they attach to the lower spine and inside of the pelvis.

Over time this can cause weakness and tightness and encourage lower back pain. Fixing this issue at home takes time, but can be done through a hip flexor stretch.

Kneeling on the ground with the front foot put far out in front of you lunge forward while keeping your trunk over your hips and head up. The stretch will occur in the front of the thigh and hip toward the medial part of the leg that you are kneeling on. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds breathing in and out then switch to the other leg.

How To Fix Lower Back Pain At Home

Lower back pain is an increasingly common experience for so many people around the world. It can strike after exercise, traumatic event, or even lifting the laundry bin. The spine and its muscles are a robust network to support the body and its movement but can also be the source of discomfort and pain.

The most important aspect of dealing with low back pain is getting the right care at the right time.

If you experience a traumatic injury or event that leads to back pain seek immediate medical attention. The list of stretches and exercises below assume that your back pain is a non-emergency injury and you can tolerate a pain-free range of motion throughout each movement.

These movements are in order of intensity and complexity, if you are trying them at home do work through the list progressively.

All of the stretches should be done daily and exercises can be completed in 3 sets of 10 repetitions 3-4 times a week. Also, if you have a foam roller that can too be a good way to carefully releave pain.

Quick Lower Back Pain Relief With 3 Easy Steps

If you have tried adaptations such as improving your work setup or adjusting your posture and dont have any improvement in pain within two to four weeks, you may want to seek a formal consultation with a healthcare provider or physical therapist, says Stephens.

Its not a good idea to live with pain too long physical therapists can usually be of more help if you come earlier in your pain episode, he says.

In the past, many doctors recommended bed rest for back pain, but thats no longer thought to be a good solution, says Stephens. Were pretty sure that doesnt help you get through an episode of low back pain any faster or end up with a better result, he says.

Theres nothing wrong with taking it easy for a day or two, but thats really the most that someone should be following any type of bed rest. After that, they need to try to introduce movement, because thats so important in helping tissue heal, says Stephens.

    Apply An Analgesic Preparation

There are a variety of topical remedies in the form of gels, creams, and ointments that can ease your back pain, including:

    • Capsaicin: The active ingredient in chili peppers, capsaicin acts to temporarily block the way your brain interprets the pain signal that is transmitted through your nerves. Initially, it makes the nerves in the area more sensitive to that signal. But with prolonged use, capsaicin desensitizes the nervein other words, the nerve is less reactive to that same pain trigger.
    • Menthol: Pain relief preparations that contain menthol have a cooling effect. It acts similarly to capsaicin, initially sensitizing, then desensitizing nerves to the pain signal attempting to send a message to the brain.
    • Arnica: Arnica comes from a flowering plant with yellow, daisy-like heads, scientifically named Arnica montana. The only United States Food and Drug Administration-approved and regulated form is the homeopathic preparation. In homeopathy, remedies are created from natural substances and are unique because they are significantly diluted. There is research providing evidence that homeopathic arnica has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.
