Spinal cord stimulation, otherwise known as SCS, is a chronic pain treatment that delivers small electrical pulses to the pain sensing pathways of the spinal cord. SCS alters the pain signals traveling to the brain, leading to a decreased pain level.
A spinal cord stimulation system consists of leads, an implantable pulse generator , remote control and portable charging system. Who Is A Candidate
An evaluation of your physical condition, medication regime, and pain history will determine whether your goals of pain management are appropriate for SCS. Disadvantages And Risks Of Spinal Cord Stimulation
One of the most significant drawbacks of spinal cord stimulation is that the therapy does not produce the desired results for everyone.
Spinal cord stimulation is considered successful if pain is reduced pain by at least half, but not everyone reaches that goal. With traditional low-frequency therapy, about 50% to 60% of those using spinal cord stimulation reach that goal, but studies have shown more than 80% experience significant pain relief when using newer, high-frequency therapy.1,2
Spinal Cord Stimulator Implantation
During the permanent implantation procedure, the generator is placed underneath the skin and the trial electrodes are replaced with sterile electrodes. Unlike the trial electrodes, these will be anchored by sutures to minimize movement.
The implantation can take about 1-2 hours and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
After the local anesthesia has been administered, your surgeon will make one incision to hold the generator and another incision to insert the permanent electrodes. The incisions are about the length of a drivers license. As in the trial procedure, fluoroscopy is used to determine where the electrodes are placed.

What Happens During Surgery
The surgery generally takes 1 to 2 hours.
Step 1: prepare the patientÃ You will lie on your stomach on the table and be given light anesthesia. Next, the areas of your back and buttock are prepped where the leads and generator are to be placed.Step 2: place the leadsÃ The electrode leads are inserted with the aid of fluoroscopy . A small skin incision is made in the middle of your back , and the bony vertebra is exposed.
A portion of the bony arch is removed to allow room to place the leads. The leads are positioned in the epidural space above the spinal cord and secured with sutures . The leads do not directly touch your spinal cord.
Step 3: test stimulation Depending on the SCS device being implanted, you may be awakened to help the doctor test how well the stimulation covers your pain areas. However, modern SCS device leads can be positioned based on anatomy or electric monitoring of the nerves. Settings from the trial will be used to program the pulse generator at the end of surgery, so your feedback is important to ensure the best pain relief.
In some cases, if the leads implanted during the trial are positioned perfectly, there is no need to reposition or insert new leads.
Step 6. close the incisionsÃ The incisions are closed with sutures and skin glue. A dressing is applied.

HF10 spinal cord stimulator therapy is often not the first treatment option. As with any other treatment option, the HF10 comes with some complaints. Some HF10 issues are discussed below to help you understand them better.
