Treatment For Stretchmarks In Teenagers

How to Rid Stretch Marks

If there is an underlying cause of concern, then your teens doctor may initiate treatment for the condition. If stretchmarks are caused by obesity or overweight, then the teen would be guided by a nutritionist for a healthy diet and workout regime.

Stretch marks can fade away over time and are harmless. Treatments may only partially remove/diminish stretch marks. The best way is to identify and treat the underlying cause and maintain a healthy weight so that these marks may disappear over time.

The following treatments may be given to improve the appearance of stretchmarks. None of these methods has been proven to be highly effective. A dermatologist may recommend any of the following treatments .

  • Retinoid creams, lotions, or gels: These are derivatives of vitamin A. Tretinoin is one of the retinoid creams which is available as Retin-A, Renova, or Avita. Stretchmark creams can be applied to the skin, and they may help rebuild the skin collagen fibers and make them look somewhat like normal skin. This may cause skin irritation in some individuals.
  • Laser and light therapies: These therapies stimulate the production of collagen and elastin of the skin.
  • Microdermabrasion: This treatment uses a hand device to blow crystals that remove a fine layer of the skin. It could eventually stimulate the growth of more elastic skin.
  • Non-ablative radiofrequency: It involves treatment with special radiofrequency devices to promote collagen growth.
  • Cause Of Stretch Marks

Many factors can cause stretch marks, including:

    • too rapid weight loss

When you lose weight too quickly, the skin stretches and cannot return to its original place.

The dermis is damaged and a stretch mark appears.

If you tend to gain and lose weight, these fluctuations raise your cortisol levels and lead you directly to stretch marks.

When the belly rounds, there too the level of cortisol rises and causes the stretch marks of pregnancy.

Too rapid growth, and sudden muscle development have an impact on the skin, and stretch marks appear.

Certain diseases can cause stretch marks such as Cushings syndrome, Marfan syndrome, Ehlers Danlos syndrome, and certain adrenal gland disorders.

including cortisone in all its forms.

    Be Careful Of Uv Exposure

“Lying in the sun on holiday can pigment the stretch mark, which you don’t want,” advises Dr. Hextall. “It’s very important when you have new stretch marks to wear a high sun cream like factor 50 sunblock with both UVA and UVB protection, and reapply as often as a low factor sun cream. I’d recommend wearing a UV top if you’re swimming in the sea because reflection from the water means higher sun exposure.”

    Why Do Stretch Marks Happen

To understand the process, you have to define the term fibroblasts.

This is a specific cell in the body that is linked to connective tissue.

These connective tissues are made of collagen and elastin fibers which give the skin structure its elasticity and suppleness.

Their origin is in fibroblasts and the more the latter multiply, the more they make collagen and elastin.

If the levels of collagen and elastin are insufficient because there are not enough fibroblasts, stretch marks appear.

The reason why some people have more stretch marks than others comes directly from the bodys production of fibroblasts.

Stretch Marks In Teen Boys: Are They Normal

Natural remedy to get rid of stretch marks

Most of us associate stretch marks with girls and womenat least I always have. I have a vivid memory of finding my first stretch marks when I was 11. I had stretch marks virtually everywhere, it seemed, including my shoulders and knees.

But Id been prepared: My mom had told me what they were, and warned me they ran in our family.

Two decades later, I was greeted with angry red stretch marks across my pregnant belly. I didnt love these pregnancy battle scars, but I expected them, and knew that theyd fade.

I thought I knew all there was to know about stretch marks, but when a friend confided in me recently that her teen son had stretch marks up and down his back, around his hips and along the back of his arms, I was surprised. I knew that teen boys could get stretch marks, but I didnt realize just how extensive they could be!

My friends son had come to her worried that hed been bruised or hurt in some way. No one had told him what stretch marks were, and my friend felt bad that she hadnt prepared him.

I have two boys, and Ill admit that I didnt even think to prepare them for stretch marks. But considering that stretch marks seem to run in my family, I realized I better learn all I can about stretch marks in teen boys.

I connected with two pediatricians and a dermatologist to answer my questions about stretch marks and boys and to demystify the topic for all of us parents of teen boys.

Is There Anything You Can Do To Prevent Stretch Marks

The quick answer to this question is maybe. Keeping the skin well hydrated and avoiding excessive weight gain may be your only chance to prevent permanent damage to the skin. While research has yet to find the perfect product to prevent stretch marks, controlling changes to our body and weight may be our best bet to keep our skin looking healthy and smooth.

What Can You Do About Them

Stretch marks can appear as deep pink or purple lines or can even look like cuts or bruises. Probably the most important thing to remember about stretch marksbesides the fact that they are normal and harmlessis that they do fade in time.

Stretch marks start as reddish-purple lines, progress to white lines, and then often fade over a few years, says Dr. Ganjian. He emphasizes that having stretch marks is not a medical problem and you dont have to do anything about them.

If the appearance of stretch marks bothers your teen, there are things that might help decrease their appearance, including using moisturizers, retinoid creams, and trying laser therapy, says Dr. Ganjian. You should talk to your childs pediatrician before trying any of these things.

Dr. Kates says that it can sometimes be difficult to completely get rid of stretch marks. But she advises that sunscreen can help minimize their appearance.

Can I Get Rid Of Stretch Marks With Plastic Surgery

While no one stretch mark removal surgery exists there are multiple plastic surgery procedures available to help minimise the appearance of stretch marks based on the area of the body where they have occurred.

    Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is the most effective way to target abdominal stretch marks. During a tummy tuck, the majority of the skin below the belly button is removed, therefore the stretch marks in this area are also removed. If stretch marks are present above the belly button, these will be pulled down and repositioned to the lower stomach towards the suture line. This creates a smoother, sleeker appearance overall.

This 30-year-old patient came to see me following two pregnancies. Pictured here 5 months post tummy tuck, I have been able to remove a significant amount of stretch marks along with her excess skin.

This 32-year-old patient came to see me following two pregnancies and 55kg weight loss. Pictured here just 4 months post tummy tuck, I have removed majority of the effected skin, creating a sleek appearance overall.

Fade Stretch Marks! | Ingredients that WORK and the Science to Back it up

Everyone has the capacity to develop stretch marks, but those with extreme hormone levels or individuals with a family history of stretch marks may be more susceptible. I have heard many women call them their “tiger stripes,” a physical representation of just what their abdomen did to accommodate their growing baby.

Outside of pregnancy, many teens develop stretch marks during puberty in response to their growing and changing body. Extreme muscle building and fluctuations in body weight may also cause stretch marks to appear as the body contour changes. The prolonged use of some medications which can thin the skin, like corticosteroids, may also cause stretch marks to appear.

Any factors or conditions causing overstretching of the skin could result in stretchmarks. Puberty, rapid muscle growth and weight gain can be some of the causes for stretchmarks in boys and girls during teenage.

Remember that the severity of the stretchmarks may vary depending on the skin type, genetic factors, skin elasticity, and cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone produced in adrenal glands, and increases the elasticity of skin fibers .

Stretch Mark Treatments And Home Remedies

A range of medical treatments and home remedies is available to treat your stretch marks. Some work better than others.

    Medical treatment for stretch marks

A skin doctor or plastic surgeon can use lasers or other treatments to help fade the marks. It may help your skin make more collagen:

    • Pulsed dye laser therapyis a painless blast of light used on new, red stretch marks. The lightâs energy calms blood vessels under your skin that could cause the marks.

    Home remedies for stretch marks

Youâll find many creams, salves, oils, and other skin ointments that claim to either prevent or treat them. But thereâs little proof that any of these products really work. Some treatments and home remedies can fade or hide stretch marks:

    The Structure Of The Skin

In three simple points, the skin consists of:

    epidermisdermis hypodermis

    • the epidermis is the outer layer of the skin and its role is to protect it from external aggressions.
    • the deeper layer, the hypodermis, acts as an insulator and contains the fat layer.
    • the dermis is the middle layer and the exact spot where the problem with stretch marks occurs.

The main function of the dermis is to structure the skin by managing its suppleness and elasticity.

Flexibility is the skins ability to stretch.

Elasticity is that of returning to its original place when stretched.

Stretch marks occur in the dermis.

Are Stretch Marks Common In Teen Boys

My assumption that stretch marks are mostly a girl problem has a sliver of truth. According to Dr. Daniel Ganjian, a pediatrician at Providence Saint Johns Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, teen girls get stretch marks about 70 percent of the time, while teen boys get them about 40 percent of the time.

So yes, theyre more common in girls, but many boys get them too!

Dr. Erum N. Ilyas, a board certified dermatologist, says that he frequently sees stretch marks in teen boys, especially during puberty. However, Dr. Ilyas explains, the way that stretch marks present in boys is often different than in girls.

In boys, I routinely find stretch marks along the lower back and flanks with increases in vertical height at a fast rate, he says.

Dr. Erica H. Kates, a pediatrician at Holyoke Pediatric Associates in Massachusetts, sees stretch marks in both her male and female patients.

In genetically male teens, stretch marks usually present as horizontal stripes on the back, she says, and correspond with rapid periods of growth. Girls, on the other hand, tend to have stretch marks appear in multiple areas of the body, including breasts, thighs, and hips.

Causes Of Stretch Mark On Lower Back

There are two main reasons why stretch marks occur in general. Either the skin experiences internal damage just like in the case of physical skin stretching, or the collagen production, which makes our skin elastic, has diminished.

Internal damage of the skin occurs when the connective tissues in the dermis are ruptured due to skin stretching.

Since the skin is naturally elastic, the actual damage occurs when the expansion is way too much the skin can actually bear. Hence, blood vessels, collagen, and elastin fibers are torn and scarred.

There could be three main reasons why internal damage happens. First is during pregnancy when the belly grows to accommodate a growing baby. When the baby inside the tummy is big, the stretch marks that start at the abdomen extend to the lower back.

Second is during puberty, and this is more common in boys compared to girls.

The growth spurt stage is the reason why boys bulk up in terms of height and weight.

They get more muscle, and their body lengthens, which causes stretch marks to appear on their lower backs.

The third is the general weight gain that has gone uncontrolled. The extra weight you gain is unevenly distributed to body parts.

Some people pack on their pounds in their thighs and hips while the rest place their excess fat on their waist and lower back.

As your body receives the excess calories, your skin is stretched to accommodate the extra fat, hence the explanation of stretch marks.
