Uses Of Epidural Injections
Epidural injections can help with sciatica . This is pain that spreads from your lower back down your legs. Its caused by a trapped nerve in your spine. There are several things that can cause this.
- A slipped disc . This is when one of the discs between your vertebrae bulges out of your spine, sometimes pressing on surrounding nerves.
- Spinal stenosis. This is when the space around your spinal cord narrows, putting pressure on your spinal cord.
- Spondylolisthesis. This is when one of your vertebrae moves out of position.

How Well Do They Work
For some people, the shots provide short-term relief from pain, especially pain that runs down the leg. But relief doesn’t last very long. In most cases, the shots only last about 3 months.footnote 1 But that may be enough time for your back to heal so that pain doesn’t return.
The shots may allow you to postpone or avoid surgery. But they may not improve how well you can do your daily activities over the long term.

The most common problem is a severe headache that lasts for a few days. And your pain might get worse before it gets better.

Serious side effects from an epidural steroid injection are rare. But they can include stroke, paralysis, or loss of vision.

What Are The Results
Many patients experience some pain relief benefits from ESI . For those who experience only mild pain relief, one to two more injections may be performed, usually in 1-4 week intervals, to achieve full effect. Duration of pain relief varies, lasting for weeks or years. Injections are done in conjunction with a physical therapy and/or home exercise program to strengthen the back muscles and prevent future pain episodes.

How Long Do Epidural Injections Last For Back Pain
Epidural steroid injections, or ESI, are indicated for many forms of low back pain and leg pain. The goal of this treatment is pain control. Epidural injection tends to provide temporary relief from pain, and the effects could last from one week up to one year. How Often Can You Get Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections are recommended to be administered up to three to six times per year. In the case of a new disc herniation, injections may be only weeks apart with a goal of quick and complete resolution of symptoms. For chronic conditions, three to six months or more between injections is common.
Side Effect Of Facet Joint Injection
Facet joint injections are completely safe in most cases, you will only experience some mild numbness for a few hours after the procedure. This is normal because of the anesthetic influence. How The Procedure Works
The injection, given by an anesthesiologist or an interventional radiologist, is often done inside of a specialty clinic, hospital or doctors office.
Before the injection begins, you will lay flat on an x-ray table with your back slightly curved. If this position causes any pain, then you may be able to sit in a different position.
During the injection, an x-ray, known as a fluoroscopy, will be used to help guide the placement of the local anesthetic into the epidural space the area between the vertebrae and the spinal cord. This injection is designed to help reduce any inflammation in this area. This is important as studies have found, without this guidance, the medication may be misplaced.
When the needle is in the appropriate position, a contrast is injected to confirm the location and the steroid solution is then injected, ranging from 3 to 10mL, depending on the approach and steroid being used.
The entire procedure will take less than a half hour and after the procedure is done, you will be asked to sit in the waiting room for up to an hour, depending on if a sedative was used or not.
When returning home on the day of the procedure, your doctor will ask that you rest for up to 24 hours before resuming the usual activities.
If performed on a patient experiencing limited lower back pain, some can see short-term relief for as long as six weeks on average.
