When To Seek Treatment For Low Back Pain

You should seek medical attention if you are unable to do the following: control your pain, carry on throughout your typical daily activities without compensation/abnormal movements, perform your work or daily activities safely, sleep without pain, concentrate on tasks due to the pain, walk normally or if the pain has been intense, and plateaued for more than a few days. Urgent care facilities can be a quick and efficient first stop to begin your start of care if you are unable to see your primary care doctor.

Back pain can present in many different ways stemming from a variety of different pain sites commonly including, but not limited to disc herniation, facet joint irritation, muscle tension and inflammation, or sacroiliac joint dysfunction. For each of these pain generators, the pain they produce can fluctuate in each individual and may present differently depending on the patients age. This article will list these common presentations in more detail along with a red flag category.

When You Should Go To The Er

Sometimes back pain just can’t wait. For example, if you were in a major car accident, or fell from a dangerous height, you want to check for any fractures, ruptures, and dislocations. And while it’s rare, lower back pain can be a symptom of more serious neurological issues, infection, cancer, and other worrisome conditions.

So get to an ER ASAP if any of these situations are true for you:

  • Have back pain associated with serious trauma
  • Have cancer or have a history of cancer
  • Have HIV/AIDs or are taking immunosuppressive drugs
  • Have trouble going to the bathroom or can’t hold your urine or stool

Signs You Need To Go To Urgent Care For Your Back Pain

Why Do I Have Back Pain?

Back pain is one of the most common medical concerns that affect patients around the world. While most back injuries can heal on their own after six weeks, some instances of back pain can actually indicate a serious illness that requires emergency treatment.

So how do you know whether its time to visit urgent care for your back pain? If your back problem does not have an unexplained cause and is accompanied by certain symptoms, then you should consult with a medical professional as soon as possible. Some signs to watch out for are:

  • Incontinence
  • Sharp, sudden pain that wont go away
  • Numbness or tingling in the lower body

Yeast infections arent particularly dangerous to you or your unborn child. They are mostly just uncomfortable. While a yeast infection may be no big deal , symptoms of a yeast infection are similar to those of bacterial vaginosis and other sexually transmitted infections. Its best to have a doctor do an exam, just to make sure.

Abdominal Pain With Acute Back Pain

Lets say you have a sudden onset of acute back pain but you havent done anything strenuous lately. If its coupled with abdominal pain as well, you need to go to urgent care for back pain.

The reason these two symptoms together are so alarming is that they could be symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Your aorta is the main artery of the body. It runs from your heart through your abdomen. When it ruptures, youll feel as if you have an intense stomach ache.

A ruptured aorta is life-threatening. Dont waste time asking should I go to urgent care for back pain?, just go to a walk-in clinic.

    What Urgent Care Can’t Do

Note that urgent care is not an emergency room. There’s sometimes confusion between urgent care centers and stand-alone emergency centers. They will refer you to one or get you admitted to a hospital if needed. Some urgent care centers don’t have doctors, but they can still prescribe painkillers and other medications.

For lower back pain, it’s best to find an urgent care center with an actual doctor, if possible.

There are urgent care facilities that are farther away from hospitals, making things more difficult if you need admission. Similarly, urgent care centers are not legally required to treat you if you cannot pay. Before you even see the doctor, some expect you to have money so they know you can afford the care.

Additionally, urgent care facilities are not meant to replace your doctor. They will help out in the short term, but you should go to your doctor if your back pain is persistent.

Some people try to use these facilities for primary care, but it is not what they are meant for. They are meant to take the strain off of emergency rooms by siphoning off people who need immediate medical attention but aren’t in danger of dying, being permanently disabled, or having other majorly adverse outcomes.

What You Need to Know About Treating Low Back Pain

Back pain is a very common problem that affects almost everybody. It may be a simple and common complaint among many, but there are times when back pain becomes a symptom of a serious underlying condition. So how do we know if our backache warrants a visit to the emergency room?

The most important thing to do during an occurrence of a back ache is to monitor the symptoms. Can you tolerate your pain? Does the quality of pain resemble soreness, fatigue, or ache? Was there an actual identifiable cause such as engaging in a high-intensity sport a day or two before the onset of pain?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, its highly probable that you are experiencing muscle spasm or muscle fatigue. In such a case, it would be prudent to get in touch with your doctor, but a trip to the emergency room may be unnecessary.

If however, your backache becomes intolerable and is accompanied by other symptoms such as persistent stiffness, tingling sensation, or numbness, you may need to be provided with highly specialized medical attention or an urgent procedure conducted in an emergency facility.

Here are the common causes of backaches that require emergency medical care.

Slipped disc In between the individual bones that comprise the spine are rubber-like cushions called discs. They prevent each bone of the spine from coming in contact with each other.

When To Seek Emergency Medical Care

Most backaches will ease after a couple of days of resting in bed. However, if the pain has not disappeared after a few days of resting or using over-the-counter medication, it is time for a person to visit an emergency room. Symptoms a person should look out for include fever or unusual bowel or bladder control issues. It is also ideal to visit an emergency room if the back pain occurs after a bad fall, a high-impact car crash or sports injury or if it extends down the back as well as below the knees.

Incidence And Anatomy Of Low Back Pain

Lifetime prevalence of low back pain is as high as 84%, and it is reported to be the second most common reason for office visits in the United States.1 Most patients are likely to experience one episode of low back pain during their adult lives.2 It can affect individuals at any age, but it is most often seen between ages 20 and 40, with an equal gender distribution.2

The anatomy of the back is complex. To understand the pathophysiology of low back pain, a thorough knowledge of the anatomy is necessary.

A typical vertebra consists of a vertebral body, a vertebral arch and seven processes .3 The intervertebral disc is interposed between the vertebral bodies. The outer ring of the disc is fibrocartilage while the central core is fleshy . Herniation or protrusion of the nucleus pulposus into or through the annulus fibrosus and com- pressing the nerve roots is a well-recognized cause of low back pain . The laminae of adjacent vertebral arches are joined by the yellow ligament, the ligamentum flavum, which assists with straightening of the vertebral column after flexing. Hypertrophy of the ligamentum flavum is another common cause of low back pain .

How To Tell If Your Back Pain Is Something Serious

Youve been feeling a little sore, but youre not sure if its serious or just muscle strain. This post will cover symptoms and what to do about them so that you can get back to living your life pain-free.

The first thing to consider is what type of back pain youre experiencing. Three examples of back pain you may experience include: muscle strain, spinal cord issues, and broken bones . Muscle strains tend to hurt when you touch the muscle or move in certain ways.

Spinal cord issues can present pain that radiates into your legs. This can indicate sciatica which means theres an issue with one of the nerves in your lower extremities. Some people experience numbness or tingling in their lower body too.

    Symptoms Of Low Back Pain:

Terrible Back Pain And A Trip To Urgent Care

If youre suffering from the symptoms above, head into our clinic whenever its convenient for you. Our providers can review your medical history and lifestyle for signs of systemic diseases, social and psychological stresses, and risk factors that may be contributing to your pain. We will perform a comprehensive physical exam to inspect the back, assess areas of tenderness, and evaluate your spinal mobility. Through this medical evaluation, we can help narrow down the cause of your low back pain and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Some common causes of lower back pain include:

Should I Just Visit Urgent Care Instead

Visiting an urgent care center will not afford you the anywhere near the treatment or level of relief that treating with a chiropractor regularly will. The chiropractor is a trained professional with the ability to examine, diagnose and treat pain and injuries to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. If you visit an urgent care center, it is more likely they will offer you ibuprofen or muscle relaxers.

Taking medication is not the answer to cervical and lumbar spine pain. Only through a course of consistent chiropractic care can and will your neck and back problems become resolved.

Chiropractors are trained to offer comprehensive rehabilitation to individuals and do advise them as to the proper methods of lifting, bending and even standing. A skilled chiropractor can look at an individual and determine by the way they are standing and exactly what section of the spine is injured. In many cases, there is a build up of pressure in the cervical and lumbar spine that needs to be relieved. Urgent care medication that is prescribed will do nothing to relieve this pain-it will only mask it. Only through chiropractic manipulation can and will this pain and discomfort be properly and effectively treated.
