Imaging And Laboratory Evaluation

Treat your own back pain. Learn the causes of lower back pain and the best exercises.

Because acute low back pain typically does not have a serious etiology, and because most cases resolve with conservative treatment, immediate imaging is rarely indicated. All major guidelines on the treatment of acute low back pain have similar recommendations regarding imaging.1620 In the absence of red flag findings, four to six weeks of conservative care is safe and appropriate, and imaging is not indicated. Suggested evaluations for patients with red flag findings are outlined in Table 2.16 Timing between the first- and second-line evaluations is guided by the patient’s symptoms and the strength of clinical suspicion for the underlying disorder. If clinical suspicion is sufficiently high, it may be necessary to proceed directly to advanced imaging. If magnetic resonance imaging is not readily available, or if the cost is prohibitive, computed tomography may be adequate.16

Diagnostic imaging of the spine has a high rate of abnormal findings in asymptomatic persons. In studies of lumbar spine MRI evaluation in asymptomatic adults, herniated disks were found in 9 to 76 percent of patients, bulging disks in 20 to 81 percent, degenerative disks in 46 to 93 percent, and annular tears in 14 to 56 percent.21 Therefore, imaging should be used in carefully selected patients and interpreted with appropriate clinical correlation.

Pleaseprotect yourself from household toxins

–says author Debra Lynn Dadd

Heres a Little of What Ive Learned

There are basically three ways that toxic chemicals can enter the body: by swallowing, by breathing, or by contact with the skin or eyes. When most people hear about a chemical poisoning, they usually think about swallowing . Every year, five to ten million household poisonings are reported, the immediate result of accidental ingestion of common cleaning, pesticide, personal care and other common household products. Many of these poisonings are fatal, and most of the victims are children.

The personal care products we put on our skin and hair create possible toxic exposures through skin absorption. These include soaps, lotions, creams, cosmetics, shampoos, deodorants, and other common products. In 1989, a House subcommittee asked the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health to analyses 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products, and 884 were found to be toxic. Of these, 778 can cause acute toxicity, 146 can cause tumors, 218 can cause reproductive complications, 314 can cause biological mutation, and 376 can cause skin and eye irritations. Personal care products should promote hygiene, health, and beautynot make us sick.

The natural environment makes it possible for us to live on this earth. From it, we draw everything that sustains our lives. Without it, we cannot survive.

Easing Pain The Natural Way

The aches and pains of everyday life have been around as long as the human race. And before a drugstore popped up on every corner, natural pain cures were widely used.

“To understand why many old-fashioned pain remedies worked, you need to understand that if someone believes in a pain cure, their brain will produce endorphins that ease their pain,” explains Andrew G. Kowal, MD, a pain management specialist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. “It’s called the placebo effect, and it’s real.”

That being said, some of the pain treatments handed down from our grandparents and great-grandparents have real benefits. Read on to find out which remedies you should skip and which are worth a try.

A Bar Of Soap For Rls: Myth Or Reality

Like many common remedies, this one may hold some truth. Soap bars contain magnesium, which has shown to relax the muscles and soothe cramping that occurs with RLS. Soap also has a scent that may be helpful for improving sleep and pain.

However, this remedy is not proven. In other words, the soap may or may not help with RLS. Studies that have shown possible benefits have not shown dosing, administration, or placebo results. This is why this remedy is not considered evidence-based.4

Ask your doctor about this and other home remedies that may be helpful in managing your symptoms of RLS. What is helpful in one person may not be in others, but having the conversation may be the key to finding what works best for you.

Improve Your Posture To Reduce Back Pain

4 Signs Your Mattress Might Be Causing Your Lower Back Pain

Most of us spend a good part of our day sitting down, which may be more harmful than you realize. You can minimize the impact by maintaining good posture. Correct posture in a chair means having all the bones in your spine lined up neatly, like a stack of perfectly aligned blocks. You should keep your feet flat on the floor and your computer keyboard within easy reach so youre not leaning forward or slumping. This is part of proper office ergonomics.

Many apps and devices exist that can help you enhance your posture. If you work at a computer all day, try the software and app Posture Man Pat. This free app interacts with the webcam on your screen, tracking where your face is relative to your screen. If your posture starts to droop and curve, the app will alert you.

If you are looking to get really tech-savvy, try the Lumo Lift Posture Coach. This wearable device has a sensor that will vibrate when you change your posture from what the posture coach is calibrated to.

Pregnancy And Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome affects between 20% and 30% of pregnant women. A primary cause of this is, not surprisingly, iron deficiency. Iron is an essential part of nutrition while pregnant because of the higher risks of developing iron-deficiency anemia.

Between this and the previously mentioned connection between RLS and iron deficiency, its not hard to figure out that connection. Working with your doctor to make sure youre keeping your iron levels up, as well as other essential vitamins, can help alleviate these symptoms.

Also, as long as your health permits and your doctor gives you the green light, light exercise helps, too, whether its walks, aerobics or other types of lower body exercises that help keep those muscles stimulated.

The good news, says Dr. Berkowski, is that if RLS wasnt an issue for you before pregnancy, chances are itll eventually fade within a few months after your pregnancy is over.

Bar Soap In Bed To Relieve Leg Aches Back Pain

A bar of soap under the sheet is a natural remedy for not only night time leg cramps and restless leg syndrome, but also neck and back pain. Many use Ivory soap. Place the unwrapped bar under the fitted sheet to keep it from moving around. Most leg aches can be associated with dehydration and depletion of potassium. Gator-ade has sodium chloride, which replenishes lost potassium as well as rehydrates. Most bar soaps also contain sodium chloride. During sleep, it is absorbed thru the skin from the soap. A Florida man patented a cushion with compartments sewn into it to hold soaps. If you have leg aches, it would be easy enough to make a personal lap blanket using the info > . When my legs cramp, I take a magnesium pill with a bottle of water and rub my leg with magnesium oil or magnesium lotion. If the magnesium oil makes you itch, switch to the lotion.

What Evidence Is Needed

The gold standard for scientific research is a randomized controlled trial. For example, researchers would test two similar groups with restless legs or leg cramps. Half the subjects would use a bar of soap and the other half would use a placebo. A placebo is basically a fake treatment. In this case, half the group might use a soap-shaped piece of plastic.

Then, the outcomes would be compared. Researchers would find out about each group’s symptoms. Ideally, the subjects and the researchers would be blinded, not knowing who used soap or the placebo.

No such studies have been done to test this practice. It isn’t likely that researchers would be able to find funding for such a study because there’s so little science behind the idea.

Which Soap Cuts Cramps Best

5 Back Pain Relief Stretches You Can Do In Bed

Q. I have used a bar of soap under the bed sheets for the last nine months or so to get rid of leg cramps. I change the bar every 3 months.

Recently I used a bar of Dove soap instead of the Dial I had been using. My husband and I both experienced leg cramps again.

Is there a reason why Dove soap doesnt work although Dial does?

A. We dont know why soap under the bottom sheet helps some people avoid leg cramps. One hypothesis suggests that the fragrance is key.

Popular folklore claims that Dial beats out Dove when it comes to preventing leg cramps. Perhaps thats because Dove is not real soap, but rather a synthetic detergent bar.

Karl offered this testimonial: For forty years my wife would wake up with foot cramps at night. I would end up massaging her foot until the cramps subsided. Out of pure desperation, she tried the soap theory.

I would tease her, calling it her silly soap, but silly or not it works. She hasnt had foot or leg cramps since she started sleeping with it. Sometimes however, I have to push that soap bar, lying under the bottom sheet, back over to her side of the bed. It definitely has a severe case of wanderlust. She has not had a cramp in many years now, therefore Ive not been awakened in the middle of the night from cramping events. Both of us are pleasantly amazed.

Some people find our flat Bed Soap bars are more comfortable under the bottom sheet.

Support And Spine Alignment

Since sciatic pain can be triggered or made worse by improper spinal alignment, people with sciatica need a bed that keeps the curve of their spine in a natural position. One of the best ways to ensure this alignment is through a zoned mattress.

Zoning means that different parts, or zones, of the mattress will have varying firmness and support levels. For example, when we lie down, most of our weight gets concentrated in our hip and shoulder areas. Because of this, having a mattress that offers additional support here can be ideal for comfort.

Contrast that to our head and feet, which dont put nearly as much pressure on the bed. We dont need the same type of support in those areas.

Typically, a zoned a mattress is made of pocketed coils, though it can also be latex. Most of the time, youll see three to five zones. The middle zone is for the hips, and it will be firmer to provide lift, which helps keep your lumbar area supported.

The middle will typically be mirrored by two softer zones for the shoulders. The mirroring effect allows you to place the mattress in any direction and still receive the same experience. This zone is softer, so the shoulders can sink in comfortably. If your arm has ever fallen asleep before you, its a sign that this zone of your mattress is too firm.

Avoid These Before Bed

When it comes to what not to consume, Dr. Berkowski lists the four things you should avoid to help ease your RLS symptoms:

  • Nicotine.
  • Caffeine.

These products are all known to trigger RLS symptoms, Dr. Berkowski says.

Additionally, if you have wheat or dairy allergies but still consume those products, that could also be a source of trouble. What and dairy allergies can cause inflammation which, in turn, cause issues with iron absorption, says Dr. Berkowski, so its something to keep in mind.

Clove Oil For Toothache Pain

Clove is an herb that is used for many purposes, including indigestion, bad breath, cough, and toothache pain. There is a long history of clove oil being rubbed into the gums to treat toothache, and dentists have used it to treat pain after a tooth extraction.

Nevertheless, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that there is not enough evidence to show that clove oil works for dental pain. Frequent use of clove oil can irritate your mouth. Also, children should not be given clove oil because it is unsafe if they swallow it.

Stress and Restless Leg Syndrome

As with many medical conditions, stress aggravates restless leg syndrome and makes things worse. Stress is associated with higher levels of cortisol and other inflammatory markers, all of which aggravate RLS. Successful restless legs syndrome treatment incorporates stress reduction techniques. Thankfully, there are many ways to combat stress, all of which may help your RLS.

Less Stress Success

Everyone should incorporate stress reduction practices into their daily routine. If you have a condition that is worsened by stress, it’s even more important to make an effort to reduce stress levels. Deep, diaphragmatic breathing can very quickly activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the branch of the nervous system that is responsible for the “rest and digest” functions of the body. Mindfulness meditation is easy to learn and promotes reduced stress and lower levels of inflammation. Listening to soothing music is a nice way to unwind and distress at the end of a long day.

Other Types Of Diagnosis

  • A chiropractor will diagnose through touch, or palpation, and a visual examination. Chiropractic is known as a direct approach, with a strong focus on adjusting the spinal joints. A chiropractor may also want to see the results of imaging scans and any blood and urine tests.
  • An osteopath also diagnoses through palpation and visual inspection. Osteopathy involves slow and rhythmic stretching, known as mobilization, pressure or indirect techniques, and manipulation of joints and muscles.
  • A physical therapist focuses on diagnosing problems in the joints and soft tissues of the body.

Get More Iron In Your Diet

Using your diet to safely correct any iron deficiency can help alleviate RLS symptoms. The catch, Dr. Berkowski says, is knowing what your iron levels are. Iron supplements are certainly one way to get those levels up but youll need to be sure to consult with your doctor about that. If your iron levels are already normal or even too high, more iron wont help you give you those benefits, he adds.

If you are iron deficient, though, there are plenty of healthy ways to get iron through your diet. Eating red meat can really boost iron levels, Dr. Berkowski says, and if youre vegetarian, eating tofu, legumes, lentils and spinach is a way to get that iron.

Other foods that are rich in iron include eggs, fish and nuts, like cashews and almonds.

A Foot Rub For Head Pain

Massage has been used to treat pain and relieve tension for thousands of years. One type of massage called trigger point massage releases a knotted muscle in one part of the body to relieve pain in another part of the body. So if you have headache pain from tension or you have knots in your feet, a foot massage could help.

“A good foot rub can release pain-relieving endorphins and can also distract you from your headache,” says Kowal.

Take A Relaxing Epsom Salt Bath

Best Mattress For Back Pain Guide (What Type Of Bed Is Right For You?)

Epsom salt, or magnesium sulfate, works its way through the skin and into sore muscles. Soaking for about 20 minutes can help to ease sore back muscles, especially after exercise.

When taking an Epsom salt bath, youll want to make sure the water is warm. Hot water can cause muscles to swell and cold water can cause muscles to cramp. The Arthritis Foundation recommends a temperature between 92 and 100°F . Temperatures higher than 104°F arent recommended, especially if you have heart problems.

You can also enhance the soothing results by bringing a tennis ball or other rubber ball thats similar in size, with you in the tub. Put it on the small of your back or midback and move side to side. The effect is like a massage to your back, and it further loosens up tight muscles.

An added benefit of Epsom salt is that its great for your skin. Epsom salts can exfoliate dead skin cells, soften the skin, and reduce areas of itchiness.

What Causes Restless Legs Syndrome

According to Dr. Berkowski, restless legs syndrome is mostly a sensation problem with your brain, not your legs. But those issues do affect the muscles and nerves in your legs. Its not 100% a brain issue, but it does cause these abnormal sensations in the leg area, he says.

While there are a few potential causes, Dr. Berkowski points out these two main causes:

  • Genetics. While much about the genetic components that cause RLS arent fully understood, studies indicate that certain genes do elevate the risk of having RLS. Additionally, studies have shown that those with RLS have a high likelihood of having a first-degree family member who also has the condition.
  • Iron deficiency. Low iron levels can affect how the brain processes the sensations that lead to those RLS symptoms, Dr. Berkowski says. And iron levels drop at nighttime which is one reason why RLS is worse at night.

Certain prescription medications can relieve RLS symptoms, including anti-seizure medications. But there are also several things you can do at home to help relieve these symptoms.
