Several years ago, I started using a walking stick for back pain when I was recovering from spinal stenosis. In this post, I will discuss my experience using a walking stick and share how this helped me get around a little easier. I have been dealing with back problems for about 20 years. Late in 2015, I was doing some stupid things at the gym and I blew a disc in my lower back and sprained my pelvis. I spent the first 6 months of 2016 recovering from that injury.

I had spinal stenosis which put me in a position where I was bent over at about a 30-degree angle at the waist, thus I was not able to stand upright. Sitting was okay, and sleeping in the fetal position on my side worked well.

After month recuperating, my wife and I desperately needed some time away. I had not been able to do much of anything for months and I was stir crazy. In mid-April 2016, we decided to take an extended weekend trip to Palm Springs, which is about a four-hour drive for us. Driving a car was fine, since that position was comfortable for me, so the trip over was pretty uneventful.

At this point in my recovery, I was able to get around by riding my bike since leaning over the handlebars allowed me to maintain the bent over position of stenosis. Palm Springs is a very bike-friendly city, so we loaded up the bikes and headed out.

Elevate your upper shoulder and reach up towards the ceiling with your head. This way you dont come up beyond shoulder level, you don’t flex the neck, and you don’t arch forward to your bent knees. Hold this position for three to five seconds, then return to the flat position on your back.

Avoid: High-impact activities.

High impact exercises, such as jogging and high-impact aerobics, can put pressure on a disc and cause more injury. Also, avoid movements that cause twisting, such as golf, as it can up back pain pressure.

Avoid: Running.

Avoid: Biking off road.

Avoid: Lifting heavy weights.

Walking is often recommended as good exercise for people recovering from low back pain . But doctors are not sure how LBP affects walking. This research tried to shed some light on the mechanics of walking in people with LBP.

These authors tested people with acute LBP and people with healthy backs. Researchers used reflective markers and video cameras to track the movement of subjects’ hips and bodies while they walked on a treadmill. Researchers also measured stride length. First the subjects walked at whatever pace felt comfortable to them. Then they walked at a pace 40 percent faster. People with LBP did the same tests again six weeks later, when their back problems had resolved.

The group with active LBP walked differently. They took shorter strides and had less movement in their hips and bodies while they walked. The authors felt that they were trying to avoid pain. Subjects with LBP actually reported significantly less pain after walking at speeds they chose. Their pain levels stayed about the same even as they walked faster and were forced to take longer strides and use their hips and bodies more actively.
