What Is Ibuprofen Used For

The Food and Drug Administration has approved ibuprofen for:

  • Fever reduction
  • Relief of minor aches and pains in muscles, bones, and joints, body pain, backache, and muscle sprains and strains
  • Pain from inflammation associated with conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Primary dysmenorrhea
  • Aches and pains due to the common cold and flu

Take ibuprofen with food or milk to decrease the chance of stomach upset.

Nsaids Are Fairly Safe But Not Risk Free

The safety profile of NSAIDs is generally quite good, especially when taken in small doses for short periods of time. Thats why several of them, including ibuprofen and naproxen, are available in low doses over the counter in this country and elsewhere.

However, as is true for any drug, NSAIDs can cause trouble. Upset stomach, intestinal bleeding, and cardiovascular problems are among the most important and widely recognized side effects. But, the list is longer than that. The risk of heart attack may be increased among users of NSAIDs, especially among those at increased risk . Another important item on that longer list is kidney injury. Most of the time, NSAID-related kidney problems develop in people who already have kidney disease or who take other medications that can affect kidney function. High doses and prolonged use are also risk factors.

What Other Medications Interact With Ibuprofen

There are several drug interactions that can occur while taking ibuprofen. Be sure to discuss any medications you are taking with your healthcare provider.

The following medications can interact with ibuprofen:

ACE Inhibitors and diuretics

Ibuprofen may reduce how well ACE inhibitors and diuretics work. This can result in increased blood pressure and/or fluid retention.

Lithium

Taking ibuprofen in combination with lithium increases blood levels of lithium. Lithium users should monitor for signs of toxicity when taking both medications.

Aspirin

Ibuprofen reduces the blood clotting effect of aspirin and therefore may increase the risk of cardiovascular events in people taking low-dose aspirin to prevent heart disease. The combination also increases the risk of GI ulcers.

Methotrexate

Ibuprofen may decrease the clearance of methotrexate from the body, causing increased toxicity. Closely monitor for signs of methotrexate toxicity when this combination is used.

Cyclosporine

Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can increase the risk of kidney toxicity with this medication. Use caution if taking the two medications together.

Warfarin

In combination with ibuprofen, warfarin can increase the risk of serious GI bleeding. Use caution with this combination.

Most cases of lower back pain are comparable to the common cold.

Depending on each patients unique situation and condition, conservative treatments and over-the-counter pain relievers may not address the underlying problem. In these cases, stronger medications or perhaps surgery might be the answer. Our goal is to provide the right treatment for the right condition, for the right patient, at the right time.

Times have changed, and the practice of medicine changes with time. As we learn more about lower back pain and how it works, well continue to refine our treatment recommendations. But our goal remains the same: using evidence-based medicine to give our patients safe, effective relief from back pain.

This As Good As Painkillers For Low Back Pain

Plus, this medication isn’t addictive, expert says

    HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Oct. 20, 2015 — Naproxen — a drug available over-the-counter and by prescription — appears to provide as much relief for low back pain as a narcotic painkiller or a muscle relaxant, a new study suggests.

The study compared the use of prescription-strength naproxen alone to the use of naproxen with the narcotic painkiller oxycodone with acetaminophen , or the muscle relaxant cyclobenzaprine . Patients who took a combination of drugs fared no better than when they took naproxen alone, the researchers said.

“Acute low back pain is a frustrating condition,” said lead researcher Dr. Benjamin Friedman, an associate professor of emergency medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

Many patients have already taken over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , such as naproxen or ibuprofen , before they arrive in the emergency room, he said. Some people may have taken insufficient doses at incorrect intervals and could be advised to optimize their NSAID regimen, he said.

“But for those patients who have already optimized their NSAID regimen, there are no additional medical therapies available,” Friedman said.

“We don’t have good medical treatment for acute low back pain,” he added.

The report was published Oct. 20 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Most back pain gets better on its own without anything,” Danesh said.

Symptoms Of Back Pain Due To Sciatica

Sciatica is a very common condition that affects the lower back. As much as 3 million people per year may deal with sciatica in the US alone. Sciatica is caused when something compresses or irritates the sciatic nerve, one of the largest in the body.

The sciatica nerve springs from the lower part of the spinal cord and then branches down either side of the body throughout the hips, buttocks, and each leg. As a result, sciatic pain is usually felt on just one side depending on where the irritation or compression is taking place, usually somewhere in the lumbar region.

    • Pain that radiates down one side of the body from the hip into the leg
    • Numbness, tingling, or weakness may occur in the leg or foot on the affected side
    • Pain can range from aching and burning to acute and severe
    • Bowel and bladder function may be affected

Ibuprofen Has Little Benefit In Treating Back Pain And May Cause Harm Study

Anti-inflammatory drugs are not much more effective than placebo and patients taking them 2.5 times more likely to suffer from stomach problems

Widely used anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen have little more benefit than a placebo when it comes to treating back pain, a comprehensive review has found.

Researchers analysed 35 peer-reviewed trials on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen for back pain, reviewing data from 6,065 patients.

They found that none of the analgesics offered anything more than a mild relief for back-pain sufferers, and the effect was too small to be considered clinically important.

The comprehensive review, in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, found while the drugs offered little to no benefit, patients taking them were 2.5 times more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal problems such a stomach ulcers and bleeding.

Lead author of the paper, Associate Professor Manuela Ferreira from the George Institute for Global Health in Australia, said back pain was the leading cause of disability worldwide and was commonly managed by prescribing anti-inflammatories.

But guidelines should be updated to reflect the drugs had little benefit, she said.

These drugs are effective for other conditions but for people with back pain, we believe there is a bigger role for other treatments, she said.

Thats one of the reasons we tend to use treatments, even when theyre not effective, he said.

Whats The Best Back Pain Relief For Spasms

Back spasms are those tensed and stiff muscles on your lower back which can be painful to the point where the sufferer cannot move. The crippling spasms can last several minutes to three hours. In most cases, however, pain becomes constant that it is not just about the physical sensation anymore. Studies show that those who are diagnosed with chronic back pain negatively impacts the quality of their life as the patient feel incapable of doing anything worthwhile while dealing with the constant pain.

Muscle spasms that usually cause back pain are the result of an overused muscle and ligaments both in the abdomen and lower back as well as well as lack of electrolytes and water in the body. If you had suffered few episodes of muscles on the lower back in the past, there is a high probability that it will reoccur since the muscle are already weakened. With continuous use on the skeletal muscles where spasm normally occurs, the muscle wears and tears causing those tiny tears or otherwise known as micro-tears on the muscle fibers and leading to further to muscle strain and injury. It is always practical to treat back pain first before going back to your daily activities.

When It Might Be Time For Back Surgery

For example, we might consider surgery if a patient has one of the symptoms we mentioned above that warrant an immediate visit to the doctor: numbness in an arm or leg, trouble with bowel or bladder control, or weakness in an arm or leg. These could be signs of a neurological condition. Other symptoms of a neurological condition include trouble using the hands or frequent falls in addition to back pain.Mechanical issues, or problems with the physical structure of the spine, also are conditions we can correct with surgery. Mechanical issues often show up in one of these ways:

    • Back pain thats worse when moving, sitting, or standing a certain way, as opposed to constant pain
    • Deformity or other structural issues with the back
    • Pain thats significantly worse when standing or sitting upright and supporting body weight

Something Better Than Medication For Lower Back Pain

Taking DEADLY amounts of IBUPROFEN for Low Back Pain

If you are one of the millions suffering from back pain, dont feel that the only way to get relief is from a bottle. Not only do these medications cause potentially harmful side effects, but they also do not address an underlying cause that is frequently overlooked by the medical community as a whole. What is this common cause of back pain?

Believe it or not, back pain often begins in the neck. When the atlas becomes misaligned, the rest of the spine shifts to compensate. Since the pain will often occur where the biggest adjustments take place, the lower or mid back may be where the pain occurs despite the initial problem being in the neck.

These shifts can also lead to a chronic pain condition known as sciatica. What is sciatica and how is it caused?
