What Causes Back Pain L5 S1 Back Brace For Pain Relief

Back pain causes are as diverse as they are common. The most common are muscular, skeletal, and disc problems. Despite their seemingly simple nature, these conditions can be very painful. Some of the most common cause of back pain is improper posture. You should always strive to sit with your shoulders over your hips. This helps to keep your spine in the proper alignment. When you deviate from this position, you put extra pressure on your back muscles, which may lead to muscle spasms and even a spinal stenosis.

Some of the most common back pain causes are as described above: a dull ache in the back that can radiate to the buttocks or legs. Although not all cases of back pain are as serious, there are a variety of symptoms that can be caused by back issues. A doctor can determine the exact cause of your back pain by asking about your symptoms and performing a physical exam. Sometimes an x-ray will be taken to check whether your bones are aligned properly and to rule out any broken bones. Unfortunately, x-rays cant detect if your disks and nerves have been damaged.

How Is Sciatica Diagnosed

After a full clinical evaluation and medical history review, your physician may request and x-ray of your lumbar spine to check the alignment and disc height. Further detail of herniated or bulging discs, stenosis or any soft tissue decline is more readily seen on an MRI or magnetic resonance imaging, which will likely be the next step.

He/she may also request a nerve test or EMG or NCS , which will identify if the muscle has lost it nerve response. This test can also help to identify if there is permanent damage to the nerve and potentially lead to sciatica surgery.

What Are The Symptoms

Symptoms of a herniated disc vary greatly depending on the location of the herniation and your own response to pain. If you have a herniated lumbar disc, you may feel pain that radiates from your low back area, down one or both legs, and sometimes into your feet . You may feel a pain like an electric shock that is severe whether you stand, walk, or sit. Activity such as bending, lifting, twisting, and sitting may increase the pain. Lying flat on your back with knees bent may be the most comfortable because it relieves the downward pressure on the disc.

Sometimes the pain is accompanied by numbness and tingling in your leg or foot. You may experience cramping or muscle spasms in your back or leg.

In addition to pain, you may have leg muscle weakness, or knee or ankle reflex loss. In severe cases, you may experience foot drop or loss of bowel or bladder control. If you experience extreme leg weakness or difficulty controlling bladder or bowel function, you should seek medical help immediately.

Surgical Treatments For L4

Surgery may be considered when the neurological deficits, such as numbness and/or weakness continue to worsen despite several weeks of nonsurgical treatments. For a successful surgical outcome, a structural condition that is known to be responsive to surgical treatment must be present. Surgery may also be advised in cases of tumors or infections.

Lumbar spine surgeries to relieve compression of a nerve root and/or the cauda equina are usually performed using minimally invasive techniques and include:

  • Microdiscectomy. In this surgery, a small part of the disc material near the nerve root is taken out. A portion of the bone adjacent to the nerve root may also be trimmed to relieve compression.

The lumbar spine in your low back has five vertebrae, labeled L1 through L5. The sacrum also has five fused bones, labeled S1 through S5.

The L5 vertebrae sits on top of the S1 vertebrae. Compression of the nerve root between L5 and S1 vertebrae can cause pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the leg on the affected side. Core strengthening can help relieve the symptoms of L5-S1 compression.

HOW TO DO IT: Lie on your back with your legs elevated and knees bent to 90 degrees. Slowly lower one heel toward the ground, keeping your knee bent. Tap your right heel to the floor then return to the starting position.

Bring the right leg up until your right thigh is vertical to the floor. Hold your right leg stationery and repeat the above steps with your left leg. Keep your core tight while continuing to alternate between the right and left legs. Stop the exercise once your lower spine starts to arch.

Herniated Disc Exercises And Activities To Avoid

Together with these exercises, that will help you to recover from your herniated disc without surgery there are also a few exercises that you want to avoid.

These are exercises that push the inside of your disc even further out of the discus against your nerves, which increases the symptoms.

Usually, these exercises include bending forward or lifting heavy weights. These activities will increase the herniation.

Examples of exercises to avoid are:

  • Crunches
  • Leg press
  • Twisting exercises

Avoid these exercises and instead perform the activities Ive described earlier to cure your herniated disc.

Along with a few exercises that you should avoid, there are also some activities that you have to avoid due to the same reasons.

Unsurprisingly these activities include the same movements as the exercises above do. It means that you should avoid all activities that involve bending or twisting your back.

I would also recommend not to lift any heavy stuff as this will cause more compression in your lower back.

If that doesnt help within six months, you might need surgery. But this is only a last resort.

Avoid The Common Causes

First of all, before back pain can be resolved, the source of the pain must be identified. When a disc is herniated in the L5-S1 area, this is caused by lifting excessive loads. When a load is too much to bear, additional pressure is placed on the vertebrae. Therefore, one of the first recommendations of any treatment as it relates to limiting back pain in this area, is to stop heavy lifting.

Symptoms Of A Herniated Disc L5

Pain Relief for L4/L5 and L5/S1 Back Injury (Disc Injury)

Common symptoms of L5-S1 herniated disc

  • Pain is sharp, shooting, and/or a patient experiences a searing feeling in the buttock, thigh, leg, foot, and/or toes
  • Sciatica is a nerve pain from an injury or irritation to the sciatic nerve, which starts in a buttock/gluteal area.
  • Numbness in the foot and/or toes
  • Feeling of pins-and-needles and/or tingling
  • Weakness in the leg and/or foot muscles and an inability to raise the foot . The top of the foot can be numb as well.

Uncommon symptoms of L5-S1 herniated disc

  • Leg shaking/spasms: these spasms are often taken for sciatica, they tense up the muscles. Muscle relaxants are the best medications to treat the symptom.
  • Problems with the Bladder and Bowel: This symptom mustnt be ignored and needs to be consulted with a medical worker. In this case, the nerves responsible for proper functioning of the bladder and the bowel are pressurized with the L5/S1herniated disc. The key symptoms are not being able to go or not being able to feel a full bladder/bowel. If you suffer from one of these symptoms, you should address your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Numbness in the Private Areas: Here is one more symptom that requires immediate examination. It means that the lower nerves are under such a pressure that they cant do their job. Unless it is treated, a patient might live with a permanent problem. Again, a trip to the emergency room should be your next step.

Intervertebral Disk Related Problems

The disc between the fifth lumbar and first sacral vertebrae has a steeper angle making it more prone to mechanical stress. Most disc abnormalities occur between the fifth lumbar vertebra and first sacral vertebra. These intervertebral disc-related problems can take many forms:

  • Degenerative disk disease: Degeneration occurs when a disc has degenerated because of loss of fluid, wear and tear of a disc, or structural changes like thinning and breakdown of the disc.
  • Bulging disk: This primarily occurs when the disc dries out and gets compressed between the fifth lumbar and first sacral vertebrae. The compression breaks down the outer ring of the disk allowing the inner part of the disk or nucleus pulposus to bulge out.
  • Herniation of disk: When the mechanical stress on the spine increases to a degree, the inner part of the disk may rupture out of its outer part. The disc may get broken into pieces too. This condition is called herniated or ruptured disk.

What Are The Causes

Discs can bulge or herniate because of injury and improper lifting or can occur spontaneously. Aging plays an important role. As you get older, your discs dry out and become harder. The tough fibrous outer wall of the disc may weaken. The gel-like nucleus may bulge or rupture through a tear in the disc wall, causing pain when it touches a nerve. Genetics, smoking, and a number of occupational and recreational activities may lead to early disc degeneration.

What Causes A Herniated Disc

So the cause of a herniated disc is the rupturing of the outer layer of the intervertebral disc.

There are several causes for this to happen:

  • Natural degeneration of the intervertebral disc
  • Heavy work
  • Weak back muscles

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc is a natural process.

Degeneration happens because your body produces fewer glycosaminoglycans as you get older. These are the water binding substance that keeps the intervertebral disc healthy. This process weakens the discus, making it vulnerable.

This degeneration can also lead to other forms of lower back pain, such as throwing out your back or back pain when bending.

Strong back muscles can reduce the pressure on the disc preventing the herniated disc from happening. It makes weak back muscles in old age a risk factor for a herniated disc.

When you combine this with heavy work and a poor posture, it can eventually result in a herniated disc.
