Does Tylenol Help With Back Pain

Are Other Medicines Better

Keep Moving® Program Knee Arthritis Exercises | TYLENOL® 8HR Arthritis Pain

Acute low back pain usually gets better on its own, and no treatment has been shown to improve the outcome much beyond its natural course.3

However, other medicines for pain relief include anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen , aspirin and diclofenac . These may give a small amount of relief, but they are more likely to cause side effects than is paracetamol.8

Some people, including those with high blood pressure, asthma or stomach ulcers, or who take other medicines have a higher risk of side effects from NSAIDs. Before taking any NSAIDs, including those bought over the counter, ask your doctor or pharmacist about the benefits and potential risks.

There are non-medicine treatments available for back pain, but many have not been studied in detail and so it is not known how helpful they are.8 However, this does not necessarily mean they will not help you to manage the pain. Ask your health professional about other treatments that might be right for you.

Side Effects And Complications

The Tylenol label warns that taking acetaminophen can cause liver disease. Because of this, the label says, if you take more than 3 drinks every day you should talk to your healthcare provider about also taking acetaminophen.

The BMJ study mentioned above also found high-quality evidence that people who take paracetamol every day are almost 4 times as likely to have abnormal liver function test results than those who took a placebo pill. Just the same, the authors say that the clinical relevance of the abnormal liver tests are unclear.

Allergy to acetaminophen and/or other ingredients in the medication is possible. If you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients listed on the box, dont take this medication. If you’re unsure, talk to your healthcare provider. And if you do have an allergic reaction after taking acetaminophen, seek medical attention immediately.

Back In Action: Updated Treatment Recommendations For Lower Back Pain

That dull ache when you go for your morning jog. A sharp pain when you lift a heavy box. For some people, back pain is just an annoyance that comes and goes. For others, it can be a devastating hindrance to everyday life.

Back pain affects 80 percent of people at some point in their lifetime. Each year, lower back pain causes about 149 million lost days of work in the U.S. and costs $100 billion to $200 billion mostly in lost wages and productivity. As The New York Times reported in February 2017, the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society have released updated back pain treatment guidelines that are similar to the evidence-based approaches weve used at UT Southwestern for many years. Many people expect their pain to be treated with a doctors visit and a prescription for medication. But we know thats not how back pain works. And with an opioid epidemic ragingin America, prescribing medication as a first-line treatment for back pain is not the safest approach for patients.

Lower back pain often can be resolved by staying active without pain medication. But there are times when thats not enough. Lets discuss when you might need to visit the doctor and when back pain is manageable at home.

So which is better for back pain: Acetaminophen or an NSAID ?

As you can see from this article, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen are more effective than acetaminophen for low back pain. This is in part due to the fact that NSAIDs can reduce inflammation in your lower back, whereas Tylenol does not.

However, if you have medical reasons that put you at risk of side effects with NSAIDs , you should try Tylenol instead. Tylenol is generally safe. Do not take Tylenol with alcohol and avoid it if you have liver disease.

After an injury, make sure to rest and ice your back for a few days. If that is not enough, use ibuprofen or naproxen. If you have chronic low back pain, check out this article: 6 Best Exercises for Low Back Pain.

Acetaminophen Won’t Ease Your Neck Pain Or Back Pain Helps Slightly With Osteoarthritis

Low back and neck pain affects slightly more than nine percent of the worlds population, while osteoarthritis affects nearly four percent. For years, acetaminophen has been the go-to drug recommended to ease these pains. Now, a group of Australian researchers are saying, Not good enough. Acetaminophen is ineffective when treating low back pain, their new research study finds, and can provide only minimal, short term benefit to sufferers of osteoarthritis.

Drugs cost money, money no one wants to spend, but extreme pain usually outweighs financial considerations. Pain in the lower back can make both standing and sitting impossible, while neck pain sometimes rules out even bed rest. Another type of pain, osteoarthritis, occurs whenever cartilage, the tough but flexible tissue that covers the ends of your bones at a joint, wears down. Any joint in your body may be damaged by osteoarthritis, but the disorder usually affects the hands, knees, hips, and spine. Since this pain generally worsens with each passing year, sufferers wanting relief are highly likely to reach for the nearest drug. But what works?

The researchers found acetaminophen to be ineffective for reducing pain intensity and disability or improving quality of life in the short term in people with low back pain. For hip or knee osteoarthritis acetaminophen provided a small effect on pain and disability in the short term.

Develop An Exercise Routine

Tip 4 of 5

Regular exercise can help speed up recovery after an injury and strengthen back and abdominal muscles. Check with your doctor or physical therapist first, but some gentle exercises you might try are swimming, walking, strengthening and yoga. Mild pain is normal at the start of exercise, but if feels worse than mild or lasts more than 15 minutes, stop exercising until you talk to your doctor.

The Dangers Of Opioids To Treat Lower Back Pain

We know this change can be frustrating for patients who have been treated with opioids or other strong painkillers in the past. But were here to put our patients well-being first. That means we need to try safer treatment approaches first before we consider potentially dangerous painkillers. If your back pain has gotten to the point where opioid medications are potentially needed, carefully discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Test Your Brain…Which Drug Will Not Help Inflammation (Aleve, Tylenol, Advil, Motrin) – Dr Mandell

Tip 3 of 5

Give your back some rest, but only for a few days. Continuing your daily activities as soon as possible can give your back better flexibility than resting in bed for a week. In fact, bed rest for too long could make back pain worse and lead to other complications, like depression, decreased muscle tone and blood clots in the legs.

Acetaminophen The Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen. Categorized as an analgesic, acetaminophen is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve pain and reduce fever. Acetaminophen is found in many other pain medications besides Tylenol, including Excedrin, Vanquish, and Aspirin-Free Anacin. Acetaminophen is also available in generic form, as well as in combination with other drugs.

Acetaminophen is neither an opioid nor an NSAID Because of this, it may allow you to avoid side effects and/or complications that make other pain medicines impractical as choices. That said, acetaminophen does come with the risk of liver toxicity.

Tylenol Does Nothing To Relieve Lower Back Pain So What Other Options Do We Have

Tylenol and back pain often go hand in hand, but a new study from Australia has presented some pretty concrete evidence that the medicines main ingredient, acetaminophen, does absolutely nothing to help with back pain. Dont despair, however. There are plenty of non-pharmaceutical options you can use to treat your back pain, and chances are they will yield better results.

How Tylenol Arthritis Works

Tylenol Arthritis contains two layersone that releases quickly for fast relief and one that releases slowly to provide lasting relief of up to eight hours. For these layers to work properly, you must swallow the caplets whole with water. There is a total of 650 mg of acetaminophen in each tablet. Regular Strength and Extra Strength Tylenol do not have two layers and contain less acetaminophen per caplet, 325 mg, and 500 mg respectively.

Acetaminophen is an analgesic, meaning it relieves pain. Acetaminophen is not an anti-inflammatory, so it does not ease swelling. For this reason, Tylenol Arthritis is best for osteoarthritis and not inflammatory types of arthritis such as rheumatoid, reactive, or gout.

Acetaminophen is thought to work by interfering with hormones called prostaglandins, reducing pain sensations within the nerve endings, nervous system, and brain.

Tylenol Arthritis can temporarily relieve other types of pain such as general aches, muscle soreness, toothache, menstrual cramps, achiness during cold and flu, and back pain. As with other acetaminophen-containing drugs, Tylenol Arthritis can also help reduce fevers.

Is It Safe To Take Tylenol Daily For Arthritis Pain

Question: I suffer from osteoarthritis. My doctor says I should keep exercising even though my joints hurt. He says its okay for me to take a pain medication like Tylenol in order to remain active. But Ive read that Tylenol can damage my liver. What am I to do?

Answer: You are right to be concerned about medication safety. But your doctors also right that you need to be physically active. So how do you balance these seemingly competing objectives?

I posed your question to two specialists at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre: One is a surgeon who performs joint replacement operations and the other is an expert in drug safety.

Lets start with the surgeon. Dr. Jeffery Gollish, Medical Director of Sunnybrooks Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre, says he sees lots of people who feel the same way you do.

Many patients, he says, fear that exercise will lead to additional damage of their joints. The fact that it hurts when they move is taken as a sign that they are doing harm to themselves. And they worry medications that mask their pain will simply allow them to do even more harm.

The issues of exercise and medication are two areas where the public has misconceptions, says Dr. Gollish. They think both are harmful. In fact, both are beneficial.

Exercise, in general, is good and wont harm the joints. The only thing we tell people to stop doing is running and avoiding any impact activity.

Ibuprofen Or Naproxen Effectiveness For Back Pain

Keep Moving® Program Calf Stretches | TYLENOL® 8HR Arthritis Pain

Ibuprofen or Naproxen belong to a class of drugs called NSAIDs that are first-line treatments for back pain. According to one study:

  • The evidence from the 65 trials included in this review suggests that NSAIDs are effective for short-term symptomatic relief in patients with acute and chronic low-back pain without sciatica

Thus NSAIDs such as naproxen and ibuprofen are modestly effective for low back pain.

The doses you can try are:

  • Ibuprofen 400mg to 600 mg four times daily or
  • Naproxen 220mg to 440mg twice daily

You should take the dose on a scheduled basis rather than as needed for about 1 to 2 weeks. Taking an NSAID on a schedule basis for about 1 to 2 weeks will really decrease the inflammation in your back. After 1-2 weeks, you can take the NSAID on an as needed basis.

You do not want to take an NSAID like ibuprofen or naproxen longer than 2 weeks without the supervision of your doctor because these medications have lots of side effects if you take them constantly for a long time. The safety of NSAIDs shall be discussed below.

Drugs And Medications To Manage Spinal Stenosis Symptoms

Over-the-counter Pain MedicationsOver-the-counter drugs are usually the first line of medication treatment for spinal stenosis. These medications may help alleviate pain and/or inflammation.

Medications that control pain are known as analgesics, and they are available in OTC and prescription forms. Acetaminophen , aspirin, ibuprofen , and naproxen are examples of OTC analgesics that your doctor may recommend for spinal stenosis.

While some analgesics only relieve pain , others reduce pain and inflammation. Analgesics that reduce both pain and inflammation are called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are examples of NSAIDs.

Prescription Drugs for Spinal StenosisIf your spinal stenosis symptoms are not responding to OTC medication, ask your doctor if a prescription drug may provide better pain management.

Prescription-strength NSAIDs are a common prescription medication used to control spinal stenosis pain. Celecoxib is an example of a prescription NSAID. Like other NSAIDs, these drugs are generally safe when used for a short time and at lower doses. Read, for additional information.

If you have lumbar spinal stenosis and have nerve pain in your legs that is reducing your ability to walk, your doctor may prescribe a neuropathic agent, such as gabapentin . Spinal stenosis in your low back can produce symptoms of numbness, tingling, and burning down your legs. A neuropathic agent may reduce nerve pain and help restore function.

Finding The Right Treatment

Most cases of lower back pain are comparable to the common cold.

Depending on each patients unique situation and condition, conservative treatments and over-the-counter pain relievers may not address the underlying problem. In these cases, stronger medications or perhaps surgery might be the answer. Our goal is to provide the right treatment for the right condition, for the right patient, at the right time.

Times have changed, and the practice of medicine changes with time. As we learn more about lower back pain and how it works, well continue to refine our treatment recommendations. But our goal remains the same: using evidence-based medicine to give our patients safe, effective relief from back pain.

Dont Throw Away Your Tylenol Just Yet

Christine Lin, a researcher involved in the study, explained to Reuters that even though acetaminophen may not be likely to provide relief from lower back pain, there is evidence that it works to relieve pain from a range of other conditions such as headaches, some acute musculoskeletal conditions, tooth ache, and for pain straight after surgery, Other experts not involved in the study were hesitant to advise patients to retire acetaminophen from their back pain regimen, commenting that more robust and consistent evidence, including verification of the results in other populations, is needed.
